Unleaded petrol

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just 2 questions on this

1. What is the chemical formula for Unleaded Petrol

2. When the combustion of ULP occurs in a car engine, what happens? Like what is the chemical equation. I've been trying to research this, but I don't understand because some sources say Sulpher and Nitrogen pops out of no where at the end of the equation.

Thanks.

1. there is no formula for petrol, its a mix of hydrocarbons. Octane is a pretty common constituent, which is C8H18.

2. Generally you get carbon dioxide and water, as with most hydrocarbon combustion reactions, but because of impurities in the petrol you get some sulphur dioxide and occasionally the nitrogen in the air gets converted to NO at the spark plug.
