I was wondering if anyone knows how a private individual such as myself (I'm legaly an adult) could obtain small quantities of petroleum ether. Ebay is a dead loss as is amazon and everywhere else only sells to registered companies and in massive quanities 25gallon.

lighter petrol is petroleum ether!

 

or do you mean Di-Ethyl Ether?

It is in products like lighter fluid and most chemicals labelled Naptha or petroleum solvents but as I'm intending to use the petroleum ether as part of a filtration process it needs to be particularly pure stuff.

well the problem occurs in the definition of Petrol, it`s actualy a mixture of Many compounds 100+ in many cases as Octane adjusters etc...

Petrol (petroleum ether) can be any one of a number of hydro carbons ranging from + or - 2 carbons and the needed hydrogens attatched to them based around 8 carbons (Octane), it`s a Catagory, Not a singlular specific product.

a bit like Kerosene has a Carbon range too.

(not having my notes here with me (still in boxes)) I couldn`t tell you that range off the top of my head but it`s something Like CxHy where C ranges from 6 to about 10 and H = Hx2+2 (or something like that), that`s petrol.

kerosene comes after that with it`s range and the Deisel follows that with even more carbons and H`s.

 

this is all from rough memory, and will hopefull be corrected later by someone if I`m worng, but that`s Roughly how it goes

Damn just read their shipping conditions I need to be a US citizen i'm unfrotunatly a UK citizen. Do you know of any UK suppliers that provide a similar service.

you may try My suuplier, Scientific and Chemical, they have a website also, something like http://www.scichem.co.uk (or maybe com) I don`t know as I shop over the phone and pick my own orders up.

(and my catalogue is still packed in a box somewhere).

Bought petroleum ether from CChem on ebay 3000ml. All came with tamper seals intact and all three had BPs of +137 degrees Celsius and will not back up his product.
