cell division

Featured Replies

 when the cells divide by binary fission they expand , but why does this take place ? is there a chemical mechanism behind this.

I believe this has to do with osmosis. During cell cycles the sodium/potassium pumps/channels are more subject to reversal. The helps reset the cation ratio of Na/K quickly at the sodium pumps resulting in a faster firing rate at the sodium pumps. It also causes more cations to be in the cell at any given time. This pulls water into the cell via osmosis.
