as for causes and esp this time of year, I`de imagine it may have something to do partly with the TV, when you see adverts or films where all the family is sitting at their xmas dinner and opening presents and genraly having a great time being together, and this may be watched by someone sitting alone in a bedsit with a few turkey burgers and a bag of frozen veg to look forwards to for xmas dinner, and no presents to give or open.

it`s that in-your-face type of effect.
