Does anyone know of any research done in this area? Specificaly what is happening as you run out of O2

If its the same as with just about any other cell the moment it runs out of Oxygen the cell cna no longer resperate and so it has no energy and withotu any energy it can't function so it dies.

 

I think thats the basics of it - was that what you were looking for?

I'm looking for something on how the neuron fires and how o2 is used in the process. How is the movement of charge initiated, and what chemical is involved?

You most likely go into a euphoric state once oxygen stops reaching your brain. Your brain releases tons of endorphins before you die, so that could explain a lot of those "illusions" people have.
