Best plant to practice breading/genetic study

Featured Replies

hi im a highschool student and think it would be fun to try to bread plants to have certain traits,(like grow faster etc) just becouse im curios, but what is the best plant to do this with, it snows here in the winter so it would need to be inside... and i have a small budget.

Most plant biologists use a plant called Arabidopsis thaliana (thale crest) as their model organism. It is a small weed from the mustard family. The advantages of studying Arabidopsis are its small size, relatively short generation time, large number of seeds, and small genome. It is especially useful for genetic experiments as the Arabidopsis genome has been sequenced and there are many resources available for studying the Arabidopsis genome.
