Why is osmosis not the diffusion of water?

Featured Replies

According to wikipedia, osmosis is NEITHER the diffusion of water molecules.

NOR is it due to solutes tying up free water molecules in the solution side (causing there to be less free water).

This is contrary to what many textbooks say (which may be to make it simple to understand).

If it's not diffusion, then how does the solution side draw water from the solvent side?
