  1. Not so sure. the health professions council doesnt prescribe what activities we need to do. just chatting like this can prehaps be deemed to fullfill their criteria. so for example either of you, which chlamydia detection system do you use as routine in your labs? Why? pros cons? if you dont test in house why not? the lab i will be working in is looking at using Becton Dickenson LCR sytem. which i have used in a previous job. the kit is user friendly and can ultimately be run by MLAs with oversight. has highish through put does need a seperate room though and requires a lot of cleaning. if fact callie there is another question you might be able to help with. How do you see the role of MLAs developing over say the next 5 yrs
  2. Hi Callie good to hear from you sorry for delay. i wasnt expecting anything to involved just general discussions of how different places work. what kits and protocols to see if we can learn from each other.
  3. Hi all This is an important part of a microbiologist role - to keep up to date with new techniques and discuss problems we have and learn how others work to see pros and cons. This seems like a good forum to begin discussions. Anyone interested??
  4. Hi I work in med labs all over the place and a grams stain will defo show up sperm present in a sample. They will look very dark gram pos almost like a yeast. but you say gram result was gram pos cocci in chains and clusters and grew e faecalis. the grams stain matches the culture, and as you have been advised earlier you need to discuss the relevance with a medic. any help?
  5. I think if you are looking for oral pathogens then Blood agar is used to show B haemolysis a trait commont to some Streptococci causing infection.
  6. Hi everyone i am new to this forum. I was hoping to get opinion on how people test for these resistance mechanisms in the first line and then what further testing the carry out to confirm. Also what experiences do people have of them
  7. these are all true. but the ecoli could catch out the unwary and make the e fecium appear resistant as the blactamase diffuse into the media. one to watch out for if you are training it is a great way to teach people to not trust their eyes but rely on their knowledge and not over complicate things
