  1. People are more selfish today as a result of political hegemony extolling the virtues of the prevailing neo-fascist, neo conservative ideologies. The virtues of which are namely Greed, Reactionary BS, and War. Bring back communism! Quick we need a balance to this increasing rightwingism!
  2. It proves the existence of intelligent hominids other than man. This is a 'human' of an altogether 'other' species. That is it is not homo sapiens. I believe it is refered to as homo diminutia and arises from a separate evolutionary path separate and distinct from our own. In this way it shatters current thinking across all strands of opinion.
  3. Extremophiles are microorganisms that can withstand extreme adverse environmental conditions such as high radiation, below freezing permafrost, and volcanic vents. Furthermore there is evidence to suggest that certain life forms here on Earth can survive in a complete abscence of oxygen. Water is a necessary prerequisite for life and so in the event that no water exists on Titan then there will be NO life there. However the key to this issue is understanding that certain compounds important to the formation of aminoacids, and other biochemical matter, important for the formation of life existed here when conditions here were supposedly similiar to those found on Titan today. This means that on Titan these prelife compounds may turn up under scientific scrutiny. I don't think anyone is looking for plankton, unicells, Republicans or any other primitive carbon based life just yet! (LOL@Ophiolite!)
  4. An excellent and lucid account of the reactions contained in such a decay.
  5. Ben Bova is writing some of the most scientifically illiterate and illinformed fiction ever. In addition his prose is dull, clumsy, and repetitive. I have never been interested in what happens to any of his characters (caricatures), and his plot, narrative fails to grip the attention. In short, he is crap.
  6. Two things: I find aspirin does help actually. Also I find drinking another alcoholic beverage the next day is a definite cure for the hangover. A small amount of alcohol is an antidote to a large amount of alcohol. It is where I come from anyway! One more thing: Marijuana definitely helps.
  7. It means that they are parts of a whole - the methane cycle on the surface of Titan. I read also that hydrocarbon rain can fill in craters left by meteor strikes and that volcanic activity can resurface the hydrocarbons. It seems to be a complex system. Titan is a complex world rich in possibilities for scientific investigation. This is an exciting project.
  8. It is an amazing find, of tremendous scientific significance. The existence of this diminutive species thoroughly shatters the current story of human evolution. I just hope that these little people did not suffer from a specieswide Adlerian inferiority complex because of their small size. Our ancestors would have wiped them all out for being hostile, obnoxious, and antagonistic in polite company.
  9. They share the same common ancestor with the sheep and sheep-related species. The ones that returned to the ocean entered their niche as predators. Their great intelligence evolved as a result of their enforced change in feeding habits. In a similar way this is how human intelligence is also thought to have evolved. A species that can alter the structure of its matter in such a way that it enables it to pass through normal solid matter, such as rock or mantel, might have evolved and remained out of sight. Such a creature could move through rock as easily as a fish swimming through water, or a bird flying through the air. In this way their molecular structure would be so different our paleontologists would not recognise their remains as fossilised fragments of a once living creature. It is doubtful if they would ever be seen at all.
  10. Ophiolite, good link to the Nasa site on the effects of solar wind erosion on the Martian atmosphere. It is always interesting I think to see how essential Earth's magnetic field is to sustain life here. We often take for granted the Earth's distance from the sun and its abundance of H2O as the principal reasons for its life-bearing ability. The fact that it also has a strong magnetic field caused by convection currents in the magma beneath the mantel is sometimes largely overlooked. Without this phenomenon it would be impossible to live on Earth. We would all have to migrate to Titan!
  11. I looked it up in the dictionary and found some definitions: topology n. pl. topologies Topographic study of a given place, especially the history of a region as indicated by its topography. Medicine. The anatomical structure of a specific area or part of the body. Mathematics. The study of the properties of geometric figures or solids that are not changed by homeomorphisms, such as stretching or bending. Donuts and picture frames are topologically equivalent, for example. Computer Science. The arrangement in which the nodes of a LAN are connected to each other. topology n 1: topographic study of a given place (especially the history of place as indicated by its topography); "Greenland's topology has been shaped by the glaciers of the ice age" 2: the study of anatomy based on regions or divisions of the body and emphasizing the relations between various structures (muscles and nerves and arteries etc.) in that region [syn: regional anatomy, topographic anatomy] 3: the branch of pure mathematics that deals only with the properties of a figure X that hold for every figure into which X can be transformed with a one-to-one correspondence that is continuous in both directions [syn: analysis situs] 4: the configuration of a communication network [syn: network topology] topology 1. <mathematics> The branch of mathematics dealing with continuous transformations. 2. <networking> Which hosts are directly connected to which other hosts in a network. Network layer processes need to consider the current network topology to be able to route packets to their final destination reliably and efficiently.
  12. Brainwashing is an enormous issue in this. I think it was Coquina who posted that young boys are taken from their homes and given life long instruction in cruelty and so on. Additionally they are denied contact with women. This is a key point because the pivotal belief that is psychologically instilled in these 'schools' is the resumed contact with the female of the species in the form of personal harems in the afterlife. This provides a key motivational drive to the naive and brainwashed terrorist, who because he has been raised by terrorist teachers only to believe the values they instill, does not know any different.
  13. The suicide drive is instilled from a very early age. Al Qaeda has a production line to psychologically manufacture these suicide terrorists by raising them from childhood. They instill values of glory, honour, and reward in the afterlife for dying in support of their cause. The terrorists believe it and think it perfectly normal because it is all they have been exposed to during their upbringing. It is constsntly taught and reinforced together with the associated military and tactical training.
  14. According to scienceforums.net Chemistry is equated in value to 'General Sciences' and 'Computer Sciences'. Now can you think of a logical argument for why that should be? Btw. "I doesn't really matter as long as it's..." does NOT count as a logical argument.
  15. You guys are tooooooooooo sharp!
  16. In classical mechanics we use dimensions. The unit of velocity (m/s) is an expression of the relation between the dimensions involved. If it were not for this expression then we would have no basis from which to apply scientific analysis or solution.
  17. Once I threw a spun aluminium toroid across the room at my enemy's head and caused a compound fracture of the left parietal lobe. Now who's dangerous?
  18. This area of science is of huge significance. Why doesn't it have it's own dedicated section like 'Physics' or 'Mathematics'. I expect it's the typical scenario of there being only so much demand.
  19. Dark matter. You cannot see it because it doesn't emit photons.
