  1. Thanks Dave, I was afraid of that. I checked my usage and we have a 512/128kps connection and for every gig downloaded we have a quarter of a gig uploaded almost. Very unusual to me, i have just started sharing the connection and the uploading has typically been very small compared to downloading in the past. Is this really the only solution? I was on the phone to tech support guy and he mentioned i might try setting firewall rules to stop the uploading. This sounds like dodgy advice to me, so i havent tried it yet. I really dont want to ask my friend to stop using this program as its what he enjoys doing. Thanks for all the replies tho
  2. Ah ok, i think i understand thanks. I really dont mind if the game runs slow, i would expect it if i have to share my connection with another heavy user, but it is the spikes and disconnections that really make it unplayable. Regarding the uploading, I am talking about continuous uploading, obviously it has to communicate with the server, but am wondering if it is possible that it is uploading in the background without my friends knowledge.
  3. Thanks for the response, sorry i might have been unclear, i know the game needs to use uploads which is why it is important. Is it possible that the download manager is uploading, strictly speaking it shouldnt be, cause it is just managing your downloads from web-sites and makes no mention of it. BUT obviously something is slowing our connection right down (from a gaming pov, websites load fine) and it does operate in some ways similar to a file share program, making hundreds of connections etc. The comment about splitting the connection is interesting, can someone elaborate on this?
  4. Hi, hope someone can help with this problem i'm having. 2 and a bit people share one internet connection at home, 1 downloads heavily, i just play net-games sometimes (ok a lot heh). There is one other on the network but as far as i know he just browses internet and msn that sort of thing. Now my friend downloads just from websites with a download manager, Fender, he assures me he always limits the speed (we get about 50kb/sec, he limits to 20) but something is not right. Any netgame i play while he is downloading is unplayable, with latency around 800ms and frequently spikes up to 3000+, where i might get disconnected. Even tho the program doesnt mention it i suspect it uploads as well as downloads, i havent used that one (Fender, as its from China) but i have seen similar and they make hundreds of connections similar to a file-share program. If it was uploading it is likely it is taking all our upstream bandwidth, as it is not much. So, is it possible that this program is uploading, and if so, any way to stop it?
  5. it doesnt necessarily imply that, only that any changes in the/a system will result in more disorder for that system; for example if you have two beakers of water at different temperatures and mix them, the entropy of the system increases even though the total energy is the same, as the difference in temperature could have been used to do work. So in other words it can never decrease, although it can stay the same.
  6. My favourite movies would have to be LOTR - return of the king Star Wars - original 3 Fistful of dollars (and other fine spaghetti westerns) Dr Strangelove Judge Dredd Terminator 2 BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT (pioneer of the prison epic genre!!) and i guess i have to say World Safari 1,2, and 3
  7. I think bloodhound has a point, blue seems more dependant on variables than spherical, as mossoi stated above in an absence of light you wouldn't describe the ball as blue. Yet if you were to calculate its volume, or circumference mathematically (thought of as a universal language) you would get a value very close, within a very small margin of error, to a measured value. Wheras how could you measure if the ball was blue?

  9. This could be true, but I think most would agree that out search for intelligent life has more to do with our need to learn more about ourselves and our own world than anything else, so it is hardly suprising that we orient it along lines that would be of use to search for a human/earth-like civilization. I think this can be tied into what I said above , and projects like SETI and our exploration of space is one way we are doing this; which I believe, will prove much more productive than any theoretical discussions on 'what is life'.

  11. I voted star trek: voyager, had great characters, great writing, and incorporated a lot of true science concepts into the show. Although I do admit it started to get a bit tired towards the end; and i have never really watched B5...

  15. I think that the same thing would happen in any similar situation, and most people (in a group) would not voluntarily take the oppurtunity to get involved in the others culture, especially when it seems the british side holds the upper hand in this particular power struggle. The same arguments are often used about immigration and immigrant communities, and its usually only the children of immigrants who become integrated into the others society. In other words i think this is an almost unaviodable outcome unless a concerted effort is made to stop this from occuring. Oh and i agree with sayonara, British people dont think they are personally superior to Welsh people, but some think that the Welsh society has a few problems right now, many Welsh people included.

    Jesus!

If Jesus returns will he be christian this time or will he still be jewish?
  18. The first one was better, i like the combo of sincerity and cynical humour, the second seemed flippant. Congrats on new son!
  19. how does it 'become genetic'?? it seems that one of us here does not understand evolution (obviously not including ed84c) and i'm hoping it's not me. The curved back thing is an example of social change not evolutionary change. So can we get back to the topic?
  20. Yes that is along the lines of what i was getting at, it would seem to me that our physical appearance and attributes would stay pretty much the same and any evolution would be along more social lines, yet they say that we are consistantly getting taller, and that whole business with losing one finger (or did that come from the simpsons ) So if this is true what is the driving force if its not sexual selection or early death?
