  1. A recent study found that people who followed a low-carb diet lost more weight than people who ate a low-fat diet. What's more, they enjoyed lower cholesterol levels to boot. So, was Dr. Atkins right? Should people ditch their fruit for a filet mignon? "Not so fast," says Pam Ofstein, director of Nutrition Services for eDiets. "Low carbohydrates shouldn't mean no carbohydrates," she said. "While a low carbohydrate plan can help with weight loss, a lot depends on the types of carbohydrates and the quality of other foods included." The study, conducted by researchers from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, found that both low-carb and Mediterranean diets were as effective as low-fat diets. Appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the two-year Israeli study is one of the largest and longest of its kind to compare the effectiveness and safety of common weight-loss approaches. The study followed 322 moderately obese subjects. Participants ate a low-fat, Mediterranean or low-carbohydrate diet. Those following a low-carb approach recorded the greatest weight loss -- averaging 10.3 pounds. Those assigned to the Mediterranean plan came in a close second losing an average of 10 pounds. The low-fat group dropped the least amount with 6.6 pounds. Encouragingly, almost 85 percent of participants actually stuck to their diets. In addition, the low-carb approach seemed to have the best overall impact on cholesterol, while the Mediterranean approach seemed to be the most effective for controlling blood sugar. While the results were eye-opening, there are some things to keep in mind, Ofstein said. Carbohydrate foods such as whole grains and fruits are fiber-rich and have a low glycemic impact. Including them daily can help you lose or maintain weight as opposed to eating refined carbohydrates and foods that contain low nutrient density. And of course, exercise is important to any healthy lifestyle. "As we know with a majority of weight-loss plans, if you follow them and include activity, you can lose weight," she said. "Weight-loss plans can be individual, and what works for one person may not be the best fit for another." Choosing an approach that works means finding a food strategy that satisfies you and that you can stick to in the long term -- which is the first step toward a lifestyle change that will help you lose weight and live healthier. 2. Synthetic inorganic pigments are mineral compounds created through chemical manufacturing rather than by grinding and washing clays or minerals taken directly from the earth. The techniques for producing these substances on an industrial scale were developed after 1800, making them the first modern synthetic pigments of importance to artists. Nearly all synthetic inorganic pigments were discovered or identified in the grand European flowering of inorganic chemistry that occurred in the century after 1750, when European industries sponsored intensive mineralogical and metallurgical research, and early chemists isolated and identified many new metallic elements — cadmium, cobalt, chromium, zinc, manganese, magnesium, and so on. (These new puzzle pieces helped John Dalton to formulate modern atomic theory in around 1805.) Several synthetic inorganic pigments still used today, including iron blue,Cobalt Green,Cobalt blue and Zinc Oxide, were discovered prior to 1800. These manufactured pigment compounds generally have excellent chemical purity and color consistency, and are cheaper to buy and available in larger quantities than natural inorganic pigments. With very few exceptions, all inorganic pigments used in artists' paints today are industrially manufactured. (Some dry powder natural inorganic pigments are available from specialty pigment retailers.) As an artist, your primary concern is to understand the generic attributes of these pigments across different manufacturers and different pigment hues (chemical or crystal variations) — that is, to see paints as Physical Substances rather than as Colours. For example, the violet and blue Ultramarines are typically granulating and moderately transparent; the many lemon yellow to deep red Cadmiums are all powdery, permanent, opaque and quite staining; compounds made with mercury are poisonous and fugitive. The historical information can also help you to understand the rapid expansion in artists' pigments that occurred in Europe between the 18th and 19th centuries The following table presents the average pigment attributes for the most important synthetic organic pigments, based on all paint ratings in the Guide to Watercolor pigments.
  3. It seems that it's pretty much impossible to screw up a batch of biodiesel when you use KOH. I've made many small batches using NaOH - but my oil titrated pretty high and NaOH didn't seem to be able to handle it well. I had many failed 2 liter batches. I've been playing around with the recipe with KOH and tried reducing the amount of methanol per the recommendation of another biodieseler on this site .It was a good suggestion, as I dropped about a gallon of methanol out of the mix and didn't have any real repercussions. My initial yield was a little lower, but we'll see what happens. I've found that by placing my glycerin into a barrel and letting it continue working, I can often salvage some additional usable biodiesel out of it. A 40 gallon barrel of glycerin yielded about 15 gallons of biodiesel after ~6 months . The reduced methanol recipe brings the cost down a bit. I've located a source for KOH locally and picked up 100 lbs of the stuff. That drops the shipping costs out of the price. 40 gallons of biodiesel took just under 8 gallons of methanol ($6.19/gallon) and 4.83 lbs of KOH ($1.78/lb) cost $58.11 to make ($1.45/gallon). That sure beats the $4.69/gallon for diesel at the pump locally!!! That's about a $90/tank savings. It's not as cheap as WVO, but it works pretty well for the short trip drives that my wife usually does - and it's cheaper (and safer!) than most blends.
  4. Why could fruit relieve alcoholism? it is because that fruit is containing organic acids, such as apples are with apple acid, citrus contain citric acid and grapes contain tartaric acid, etc. Wine, its main ingredient is ethanol, and organic acids can interact with alcohol to form esters materials. In that case, it achieves the aim to relieve alcoholism. Similarly, vinegar can relieve alcoholism is also because it contains 3-5% acetic acid which has the esterification with ethanol.
