  1. Agreed. VTOL sounds better, though, from a random and nonscientific standpoint. It also sounds more Science Fiction-y (any way to better phrase that?) than helicopter, even though both technologies exist now. For that matter, a helicopter essentially is a VTOL. It would have to be very small to be able to land on, say, a boat, and would have to be very powerful at the same time to be able to not be affected by the wind. For something that will be in a danger area such as that, there would be either many unskilled pilots and many deaths or very few pilots and next to no deaths. Second option would be more obvious for an advanced civilization, especially one that would learn to maximize its population in living on a 3 mile wide floating island.
  2. This is something that would very rarely if ever land. A hundred meter staircase would not be an ideal solution.
  3. Great, thank you. If it would be 80 meters in the air from original sea level and pushed it down 20 more, then thatd get you the 100 feet of clearance. There would still need to be a way to control output, definitely, as the first time you see the city is when its in Egypt. How would it be boarded? Boats obviously couldnt go under very well, and a 100 meter rope climb would be insanely impossible. A sort of ferry-like VTOLs could do it, but then if they get near the air wall thatd mess up or crash them. Any input?

  8. The link just slightly confused me... I was following (kind of) then got lost. If it output enough gas, it could turn into a belt around it, right? And thats what im thinking. Last line in the game would be deus ex machina. For symbolism.
  9. I know. Science Fiction, though, so... And i scrapped hydrogen power. I am a freshman in high school. Compared to people in my grade, I'm very good at science. Training, as in college classes, no. Mandatory classes is all I have. I'm not saying I know tons of science. Not physics, at least. I'm just trying to make a game with friends so I can get a job out of college as a game designer, and get college funds. You have been very helpful, so thank you. And maybe 50, 100 feet in the air.
  10. Yes, but flying over an ocean and it gets a bit trickier. Especially when its flying at a max speed of 35 MPH.
  11. Okay, that would work. How would the city obtain it's water needs? As it is a modern-like city, it would have skyscrapers with rooftop gardens, and the center half mile is a massive compact farm, so food isnt an issue, but water would be heavy to store in large quantities. It is a moving city, so it would likely A: be loud, and therefore B: land at night. Thats a likely way to obtain water, but it would displace tons of water around it as well. Would a 50 foot wall be enough to stop the displaced water from rushing in?

  13. Well, considering it is a highly advanced civilizations flying over the Mediterranean, it shouldnt be too hard to get water... After water is gained via some sort of man-made tornado underneath the city, it could be put through electrolysis.
  14. Im trying to get as much scientific basis as possible for no real reason whatsoever. Im like that, so... ya. And hydrogen power is, if im correct, harvesting the energy made creating water. Love your name, by the way.
  15. Its not actually fantasy so much as science fiction spanning from the stone age to the far future. Also, it would have to require some power, as thats the reason itd crash. Would hydrogen power be good enough to power a city like that?
  16. Woah. Ok, thanks. Where would it be most likely to be destroyed/buried? Im thinking Nile River Delta, but im not sure 6000 years there could bury it. Any ideas? Could possibly be on land if no options in sea. Also think of any historic events that happened there that couldve buried it more. It sank in 3500 BCE, game world.
  17. Thanks. Would it be more plausible for it to be antigravity or a hovercraft (assuming antigravity/null gravity was known to the city's inhabitants)? Also, how much would that change the look of the Mediterranean?
  18. I know, but im getting things like this for use to explain odd things happening. If it was a rogue planet that was caught in Sirius A's gravity after Sirius B's collapse (for lack of a better word), then what would it likely be made of? Also, what sort of things would likely make up the planet? Anyways, you said Sirius B sent out tons of heavy metals, so the planet would be covered with metal and craters regardless, right? Since itll be a silver alloy that is used for immortality, then post-cataclysm humanity (thats when they discover the Einstein-Rosenberg bridge to the planet[we really need to name the planet. Since this is atlantis, we need to figure out what their language would be closest to]) would be able to expand and become immortal. Possibly. Im still thinking that through.
  19. Yes. Thats what Im thinking. The chemicals would be confined into layers by weight, which means that most would be lighter than air. Ill just make an alloy or two, maybe. It is possible that several metals could mix and create a gas, correct? Then that heavy gas would be mixed with hydrogen in a chemical reaction. Ill have to make up stuff at this point, but Im sure its possible... I still like the powerful magnetic field idea. Magnesium-Cobalt liquid core be good for some incredibly powerful magnetic fields? It could draw meteors of metal out of the sky even, that much force. Itd be smaller than earth, however.
  20. That'd be one big ozone layer. Ozone also causes cancer, I believe, same as Ultraviolet. It's atmosphere could have several layers, maybe? The ground layer is a mix of gases able to sustain plant life. The cloud layers will be different gases that mutate and/or poison life when it rains. The upper layers would be some sort of engineered chemical that stops all UV rays. The highest layer would be mostly hydrogen and other gases thrown out by Sirius. The life would still have died out, but it would be striking to see a planet like that. Ill have to make up a reason for the gases to stay in their separate layers, however.
  21. I am making a game, and one of the things involved is the city of Atlantis. As Atlantis is overused, I decided to make it different. So, in the game, Atlantis is a hovercraft city that flies around the Mediterranean. How much energy would it take for a modern-type city of about 3 mi diameter to fly about 50 feet above the sea level? Using, say, a Hydrogen power plant. Assuming it is made of an incredibly light material and is about 100 feet tall. Also, if it sank, how much water would it displace? I need to know that so I can remap the Mediterranean sea for an area with much less water.

  23. Is Ultraviolet affected by magnetic fields? If so, very powerful magnetic field that allows growth. And thanks for all your help. Can I refer to you for help when Im stuck on something or something of the sort?
  24. They wouldnt be grown much at all by any means. Also, Sirius B would be a problem, yes. The thing about Sirius is its symbolic. In Egyptian times, when Atlantis will sink (probably flood the Mediterranean, so ill have to make an entire map of the Mediterranean adjusted to a lower sea level), Sirius was known as Sopdet, and was used to signal the flooding of the Nile. The Nile's flooding will be part of what covers Atlantis when it sinks. Sirius also is used in many cultures as many different symbolic things. Its symbolic use is very good. Thats why I am hesitant to change it. Also, it could always be a rogue planet caught by Sirius A/B's gravity recently after B shed its outer layers. It would then end up gathering lots of the metal in its own gravity, correct? Unlikely, but there's always a possibility. I attached the game proposal. There's some flaws, and I'll have to ignore most of the Stone age's history, but can't have everything, you know?
