      If I gave you a length of rope or string without something to scale them against you couldn't provide a shorter length and say it represented the square root.

      I can't resist saying this - if I gave you two pieces of string and asked you to provide a shorter length of string which is the square root of the sum of the two given pieces you could easily do it. I find it amazing that this seemingly more difficult problem is easy whereas the seemingly easy problem is impossible.

      To be much more serious about this thread - I'm sorry to spoil the fun with seriousness. lol.
