  1. I would say buy a lower wattage power supply. I'm sure a 500 watt would consume far more energy than a 200 watt. More things you add to it the more it will consume, take into account what your going to need on the PC and get one for the specific configuration, or add a little. Most PS's run optimal at 70% capacity, for future refrence.

My mom has a celeron 466 or so mghz PC running on a 90 watt powersupply:-\ and yes, still running. Its like 5 or so years old. Has a 7200 rpm HD, 1 or 2 fans, a CD-ROM, and I put my CD-RW in there... still ran, and I think 2x 128 ram chips(PC100 or PC133). Its good for just going online once and a while, with a 90 watt PS, I wouldn't leave it running 24/7/365.

I had a P2 running w/ 288 ram, CD-RW, 7200 rpm HD, and an old 8gig HD that came with it(not sure of RPM) on a 165 watt PS, ran for 7 years then it kept rebooting, not sure if it was the PS or not, got a new one and still did it. Works fine with XP though<shrug>

  2. The Hubble is obviously the money, and it's a damn shame that it's going to be put out of use. I like the comparison of ground based images to hubbles' images. That sucks man. NASA needs to stand up for the Hubble.

I'm sure they want to keep the hubble up and running. But there are plans for bigger and better, and the hubble would become a finincal drain. Its going on 14 yrs old(April 24th) and would probably be far outdated by 2010. I know there are a few plans of future telescopes in the works. One for sure is an infared telescope.

  3. Already have a SiS655Fx chipset MoBo. Wondering about chipsets, because I will be building another for someone who will be doing lots of graphical work.

I know of SiS655(TX/FX), i875P & i865(P,G,PE), VIV, nForce chipsets... Is there a 'best' chipset? I'm sure they all have their own good qualities. My SiS655FX runs at a constant 100F just about, more if I do anything on the computer so I would assume, its the weaker of the chipsets because it seems it is working 2x as hard to keep up with a 2.4ghz P4.

If anybody can shed any light on chipsets, or know some links would be great!

  4. I don't quite agree on this. My net addiction over the years as actually improved my social life and behaviour very much. It made me go to lots of social events and meeting lots of people I wouldn't otherwise. So it actualy had a very positive effect. :)

Any lan parties? I so want to goto one:( lol

  5. Odd, posted got a thank you and never showed up.

Anyway, if there is volcanic activity, that means theres some form of heat. Heat means ice will melt. Water means the possibility of life. But, could life sustain itself without water? Possibly something that generates heat and melts the ice as it needs. Its possible, but the ice would of had to of formed long ago and any form of life would of had to of adapted over centuries of water being pulled out of the atmosphere, which may be possible.

  6. May seem unimportant...but on the lower part of the picture is almost looks like two foot prints.

It was left by something. Most likely the rover. You can see on the right mark, there is a rock that was pushed down into the light soil. Had to be the rover Unless theres a mechanic working under the rover:-\

  7. I picked yes. I currently have 2 dogs, 13 years old so the end is creeping ever closer. They were both hit by a car when they were younger, one recoverd fine. The other never healed right, but could still use the leg that was broken. Of course, since it was never the same she became lazy and fat. I could really do nothing, because both were with my grandmothers for the past 5 or 6 years and she lived to far to go down every/every other day to walk them.

Recently, shes had 2 strokes from going up and down the stairs. Some kind of kidney infection. Fell down the back stairs, broke her other leg and maybe even one of her front ones. She still gets arround. Is deaf and probably half blind. But she has a will like no other, I just feel bad that her last few years were so bad:( I just wish I could have her over again, but only from the time we had her. of course, diffrent environment, diffrend up-bringing would result in a diffrent dog:(

  8. Ok, this is my take on why.

Humans have a violent past. Violent Evolution. We evolved because we used tools. Those tools became weapons, our brains evolved to better use those tools as weapons to survive.

An aline species may not have the same past. I've thought, came up with one possible situation... An alien race that was suppressed by a larger stronger dumber species. Using for the smaller smarter quicker species for food or what now, the smaller species would of evolved to be more stealthy, better equiped to survive, more strategiecly based to out smart the larger species. The only way I could think of this happening, is some large being, no limbs or very short ones.

Now, I can think of something on earth that sort of resembles that. Dolphins. If I remember correctly, a dolphin has the largest brain to body mass ratio, other than humans of course.

  9. This may sound ludicrous, but humans may also live over 200 years.

I beleive! Scientists have already increased the lifespan of lab mice approx 30-50% by way of Caloric restriction. Far off from human testing, of course.

Demosthenes, I tend to rant alot. Especially at 5am. Also, yes I strongly beleive in aliens. If life could evolve on this little planet then it is possible elsewhere. Once we land on Mars, or maybe even before. It will be prooven. The smallest microbe that once sustained life, was at one time an alien or extraterrestrial.

  10. There must of, at one point been some form of liquid on mars. Water is defenately a possiblilty. The chances of some object in space crashing into the planet with some form of solid or liquid that would of been a liquid in Mars' atmosphere are to high.

In large quantities. Yes There was water on mars. Saw a special on PBS about the earths magnetic feild. How it reverses it self(North pole moves to the south pole) every so many thousand years. But while switching from N to S, the strength of the feild dips VERY low, so low that it is possible for solar atoms to peirce the atmosphere and carry off diffrent atmospheric particles. Including water. Which is one theory on Mars' downfall.

  11. heh, in my house... we have 4 pre built. Compaq(my old one) HP(mom's) IBM PS/1(First PC, 25mghz:-\) and a Gateway we got from an uncle that died. Mine is pre built, but not from a major MFGR, got it from PCUSA.com.

The IC7-G MB looks ok. My ASUS P4S800D-E Delux has the same basic stuff. But lots of features. It can talk, it has just about any connection you can have FS, BP, PS... whatever. Its there. Only thing, its not made for the Thermatake Intruder connection, that was kind of a downer, but can live without.

Has a SiS655 TX chipset which actually runs hotter than my P4 chip at all times. Normally, no activity SiS is at about 100F, P4 arround 85F. I log on to vzones, graphical world. SiS goes up to about 107F, P4 is arround 92F. So its working harder than my P4, guess it could of been a better chipset but it still gets the job done.

Looked for reports on chipsets, but found next to nothing. The i875 and SiS655 were both rated at the top of their class, but not much more than that.

  12. well actually... lets just say marijuana is not my substance of choice. and i know lots of people like me who can handle things once in a while without any problems or habituation...

on another note' date=' would you happen to be marzman from vb5? ;)[/quote']

Oi:-( don't tell me its worse. I would hate to hear that:-(

    And yes, I am:-p

  13. At some point in time, could this statement be true? The ratio of dead to living defenately grows closer to 1:1 every year, slowly but it does. Someday, could the living overtake the dead? Could the world support it? Would it peak, then fall drasticly due to lack of food? Or oxygen?

  14. Good' date=' its advisable not to.

I know a good number of people who were once decent and had brains but with excessive use they just got brain dead and became idiots..........most of my area actually, (i live in the "drug capital" of NZ)[/quote']

Yea, I never plan on doing anything, ever. Brother was killed because his ride decided to pick him up drunk and high. Hit a telephone pole at 114MPH. That and found some type of viles in my basement when I was 10 or so. Forever straied from anything.

  15. Agree on build it yourself. HP's suck. Their PS's blow. Heard they have been shaping up though, they have good deals if its not required for maximum performance or upgradability. Cheap, and sometimese even free monitors. Havn't looked at other MFGR's. Maybe even the Mac G5 would be a choice... its rather amazing. Check it out if you can.

Any MB should be an ASUS. I am now a lifetime follower of ASUS. Their MB's are packed w/ features. I think their focus is on intel more, since it is mass produced more than AMD but that could be slowly changing.

And yes, thermaltake case would be a defenate. but god, the wires on their new damier line is crazy. Total of 5 fans on the case. Not counting any on the MB or PS. But it is defenately a good case. I have one and love it. Rather loud though.

Find deals on ram, CD-RW DVD -/+ R/RW's, ram, gfx cards. Can really cut down on building costs with rebates.

  16. Jeeze faf, thought you would be the last person to touch anyting. Glad its not anything heavier, nor more frequent. I'm sure with all you do, you need to unwind once and a while:-p I still havn't touched it, anything for that matter.

btw... mom smokes it, shes a major manager at the IRS. Supposedly the best in the country on her level. She smokes it like 2-3 times a day maybe.

  17. Ok. I love the theory of evolution. I just had to post.

It is very possible man will become extinct. As said, natural disaster, man made... or I think once we evolve mentally beyond our limitations. Say your planet has fought its way to the top as a civilization, from the beginning. occupying multiple galaxies. Would you stop at nothing to limit others from over taking you? I would say so. Also, as said we do not live in a utopia nor would any other life form existing in with us in this age, even if it is billions of light years away. We are being watched, anybody smarter than an ape can tell that.

The chance of us not forcefully, or naturally becoming extinct depends on many variables. Some of which we control. We have to play our cards right when the time comes. With all the Science Fiction in Hollywood, we have seen many instances of destruction. One day, we will be prepared, but will it be to late?

And... in reply to somebody who said we have reached our evolutionary limit. That is false. The only limit on evolution is time. Humans have occupied a very short time on this planet, by no circumstances is this our final time on it. Take a look at the past 100 years. 100 years ago, we didn't know how to fly. 100 years ago, we didn't have the knowledge we have now. 100 years ago, we didn't have the vast communication we have now. These are all forms of evolution.

Last thing. Our biggest jump is yet to be seen. We are on the verge of many many discoveries. 2014 will not hold deviation for us. It will hold something much larger. Take into count, the 13 yr old that has graduated college (Gregory Robert Smith) He is probably 10 yr ahead of anybody else on this planet. In 2014, he will be about 25 yrs old. In those 11 years, he is planning to study aerospace engineering, political science and biomedical engineering. Anything that happens in 2014, will stem from his findings. I know for sure, he isn't the only person. There are many great minds in this day and age, some probably roaming this forum.
