The Ancestors Tale. Very interesting.

Geek, I know

No-one knows.

Why is that? Because we have not found and described every species on the Earth alive today. Unless we know this, the best we can do is estimate.

What we can tell from the species that we do know of, the rate is fast enough to be considered the beginning of the next mass extinction. Caused almost exclusively by us (lovely bunch we are).

• They have no gills (must come up to the surface for air.
• They internally fertilise during sex.
• They give birth to live young.
• They have vestigial legs.

No fish have these qualities. Both Dolphins and Whales have all of these qualities.

I'm The Alpha, studying Ecology and Environmental Management at Notts Trent University (so you'll see me around the Biology forums).

I am very fond of ecology (a good thing I guess), evolutionary biology, geology, palaeontology and astronomy (go figure).
