  1. I realise I could probably be massively out of my depth here, but i've recently gained a desire to learn and become capable in the world of computer science. Consequently, with such a massive field to learn about I was wondering where to start, and so basically I set up this thread to ask for any tips or recommendations of how to learn about it.

Currently I study History at a university in England which leaves me with a fair bit of spare time but not much money and so im basically looking for help or free internet sites that can teach me the basics from which to develop a further understanding. Or, if any of you could give me a basic introduction and explanation, it could be very helpful

I currently have next to no knowledge about the subject so i am not expecting there to be much you can help me with.

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

i think the best way is to start from the beginning learn the basics and go from there
  2. Hi: To start off this is not a homework question.

Here is my problem and the info I have,it falls under physics and engineering.

you have a 6"x8" piece of Titanium 2.54mm thick. This piece of metal has dents in it from 1 to 25mm deep.

What I need is a chart that shows the amount of kinetic energy required by a projectile to make the deformation at the point of impact. I think this info should be available someplace but I dont know where to start looking. I am sure a formula exists to solve this but im not a engineer. I dont know what other info you need to solve this problem. The projectile will vary that is why I need a chart to find the minimum amount required given an amount of energy put in.

An exaple of a question is "can a projectile(with x amount of kenitic energy at point of impact) make a dent in titanium to (y) depth. I want to look at the chart and be able to say yes or no. I hope somebody can solve this or point me in the right direction. Thanks for all your help.

can you be a little more specific how many dents does it have
  3. here is my theory on the universe...

I think the universe is not as big as we think.

I think we are seeing the same stars, planets or whatever many times over and over AND over because of gravity.

I think there is a central part and when we look into space we are seeing our sight pulled by gravity. We are basically seeing the same planet but farther away, we think. Because the sight is a lot farther.

The farther a planet seems away, the older it seems.

think of looking in a circle, with the stars also altering the way it goes. You see the same planet but never the same spot because of all the stuff moving.

The Universe never come to an end, Gravity does not allow that. It is being sucked in by some huge force.

what are you basing these assumptions on
  4. This may be a little late for an announcement (a few people have noticed this already), but the Politics forum is now closed to members with less than 30 posts who have been registered for less than one month.

The restriction is designed to help keep idiots out of Politics while keeping discussion of generally good quality. We certainly hope you've joined SFN for the science anyway, not the politics section.

i know my politics well and i think that the waiting period should be lifted and given full usage immediately but if you feel the need to have this in effect then i will abide and put in my needed time before i am administered complete political access
