  1. Some of you may have heard the old rhyme that goes "Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors warning". It basically means that if the sky is red when the sun sets, then the next day should be a clear and sunny day. And if the sky is red while the sun rises, then the weather will be miserable. I live in the southern hemisphere where the sunrises in the east and sets in the west, and I have found this saying to be usually correct. Can anyone please explain to me why this is? Has it something to do with air pressure? I don't think its pollution because there is little to none where I live.
  2. Ahh yes I understand now thank you. However, what if water was used as the membrane? The h+ ions could react with OH- ions in the water to create a water and a current. I have drawn up a quick diagram to show. Basically current is applied to the electrodes, producing hydrogen and oxygen which gets trapped in the test tubes. Then a component is added to allow the electrons to flow. Note Mistakes in diagram - There will be different levels of gases produced in each test tube. The test tube on the right looks as if it is sealed, it is not. Will this work. I got my idea from this website: http://www.sci-toys.com/scitoys/scitoys/echem/fuel_cell/fuel_cell.html Basically I want to do the same as what they have done on the website but i wish to store hydrogen and oxygen some how instead of just using small bubbles of it.
  3. I wish to construct a very simple fuel cell. I wont spend a lot of time going into detail of my design but all I want to know is: -If i had a tank of hydrogen gas and a tank of oxygen gas and inside the tanks was a platinum electrode (the catalyst for converting h2 and o2 into its ions). By connecting the two electrodes together with a component in between, e.g. a light bulb. Will this produce an electrical current? -What will happen to the gases (oxygen and hydrogen)? Where will they go? because they are only joined by a wire they cant react together to form water The reason I ask this is because many fuel cells require an expensive, hard to find material which is used as a membrane to allow the ions to pass through it to react with the ions on the other side to form water, this is called a PEM (proton exchange membrane). I just want to build the simplest fuel cell possible. I have done so much research on this subject that I have become confused so please don't hesitate to tell me why or why not this wont work.
  4. Try opening the files in an audio editor that shows the sound waves on the screen, then you will be able examine both files. I dont know if it is possible for corruption over wifi because usually all bits and bytes are checked before written. It could have been an error in the software you used to transfer the files.
  5. Thankyou for your responses. Unfortunatly my car stereo has no aux inputs either in the front or back, so I cant use that idea even though it is the cheapest and easiest. Yes I think bluetooth is the best option, no interferance from other radio stations and it is digital so the output should be exactly the same as the track. The only down side is the cost of a bluetooth enabled stereo, as they are not as common as a cd/mp3 stereo. But if I am going to get a bluetooth stereo I might as well get one that has aux inputs. But anyway, thankyou for your posts everyone.
  6. Im looking for a way to connect my mobile phone mp3 player to my car stereo. I wanted to know, in terms of audio quality, which is the better option: 1. Using the mobile phone's bluetooth to play audio to a bluetooth enabled stereo. 2. Using a FM transmitter to transmit audio a short distance from the output of the phone to the car stereo. 3. Use a tape cassette adaptor to insert into the car stereo and to connect it to the speaker jack on the phone. I have heard the quality on standard FM stereo transmitters and its pretty good, but you can still hear that the audio output is not as good as the track. Does anyone know if bluetooth or a tape cassette adaptor would be any better? I have my doubts about the tape cassette, im guessing it wouldnt be any better than a normal cassette tape. I have never heard audio through one of these 'adaptors' or a bluetooth stereo so I thought I would ask other people that have tried the other options. At the moment I dont have a bluetooth enabled stereo, or a tape cassette adaptor and I would really like to get the best quality audio playback i can.
  7. Yeah thats right, what I said doesnt make sense now that I read it.
  8. To know how many MOLE of an element you have, you have to tell us how much the element weighs. If you have one CH4 molecule, than you have an extremely small amount of MOLES. CH4 has a molecular mass of 16, this can be found by adding the mass numbers of each element together (12 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1). So that means that if you have 16grams of CH4, then you have 1 MOLE of methane. Say you had 100grams of methane and you wanted to know how much hydrogen you had you would take the weight (100grams) and divide it by the molecular mass of CH4 (16) 100grams / 16 = 6.25 MOLE of methane If you have 6.25 MOLE of methane, thats also means that you have 6.25 MOLE of hydrogen atoms and 6.25 MOLE of carbon atoms. I hope that helps, if it doesnt then think of it this way, if an element has a mass number of 12, that means that if you have 12 grams of that element, then you have 1 MOLE of that element.
  9. Ok i figured something out. If you have 1 mole of hydrogen gas, that would weigh 1 gram and you could get around 100,000 coulombs out of it at 1.2volts (i think). 100,000 coulombs would be the same as having a 27.78 Ah 1.2volt battery, which would weigh something like 500g. The equipment needed to store and convert the hydrogen and oxygen into electrical current could weigh up to 20kg which would be the same as having 40 batteries. But the thing is that if you want more energy, you can store a lot of hydrogen with 20kg equipment, but if you want to have more energy from batteries, each battery will take you up another 500grams. So it would be better to use a fuel cell for a project than a tonne of batteries. Now i think i just made a terrible fool out of myself by posting all this, and i could be completly wrong with my estimates and calculations. Could someone please let me know if I should go back to school and re learn chemistry and physics?
  10. To build an electric car you need a lot of very heavy batteries to give the car reasonable performance. Wouldnt it be better to use a fuel cell as the power source because hydrogen is so much lighter than a lithium battery? I have seen fuel cell motorbikes that use hydrogen from a tank and oxygen from the air to react in a fuel cell to power the bike for a reasonable length of time, and the bikes only weigh about 80kg. Other battery powered motorbikes have the same performance but they are much heavier because of the batteries needed. Can you store just as much energy or more in a tank of hydrogen (under pressure) as you can in a battery of the same size and weight?
  11. The way i would go about doing this is using a simultaneous equation. But unfortunatly its not my homework question so im not going to figure it out. Good luck
  12. Please correct me if im wrong but if you draw a punnet square with two pairs of the two recessive 'c' genes needed to have a left handed child, then there would be a 100% chance of a left handed child. Thats if there is a 'c' gene. I cant remember all the rules exactly but thats what I learnt in school. Note: I am not responsible if your child/children are right handed.
  13. Im not talking about burning a cd or dvd, im talking about creating an ISO onto a hard drive. The time it takes to create an ISO varies from about 7 minutes to 2 hours and sometimes a day (yes i know that even sounds ridiculous to me now that you say it, possibly the disk had lots of errors). If you have two disks that both contain 700mb of data and one of them is copy protected. It will take about 7 minuts to make an image of the un-protected disk and around 2 hours for the protected disk, even though they both contain the same amound of data. Im no computer genius, i just joined the forums and i thought I would post something just to try this site out.
  14. Hey im new, this is my first post. I use a program called CDspace5, I am yet to find a cd/dvd that it cant make and run an image of (it even does operating system disks). It is better than most ISO software which can take up to a day to make an image of where CDspace takes 2 hours at most (even on my slow 800mhz pc). An image can easily be made into a virtual drive and you can have 26 virtual drives altogether. I just thought I would share that info with everyone since im bored and it is my first post.
