  1. As a mermaid, I would gravitate toward the notion that living in the ocean is awful, and that I'd very much like to live in a warm dry house, and have some children who have legs. A cell phone would be nice too, and maybe an Ipad. I wrote a poem about my mermaid theory of gravity: Oh, just look at those bubbles as they rise by the kelp mammals share none of my troubles im sure evolution would help I spend every day in the water my skin is so pruny and creased half man, half fish, what a bother what god would create such a beast Life is so boring alone in the sea Living on land would be fun At least I can eat all the fish that I wish But it's always a meal for one.
  2. Potential energy of a gallon of water at 200 feet = mass of gallon of water * acceleration due to gravity * height I like to do calculations in units of the metric system, so its [8.34lbs*(1kg/2.2lbs)] *[9.8 m/s^2]* [200ft*(0.3048 meters/foot)] = energy required = 2264 Joules Lets say you use 10 gallons of water a day. That's [2264 Joules * 10] =22,640 Joules in a day due to lifting the water, or [22,630 Joules/day * (1 day/86400 seconds)] = 0.262 Watts (this is somewhat of a false statistic, because this assumes you're slowly lifting small amounts of water at a constant rate, adding up to 10 gallons at the end of the day). Watts are the number of Joules per second. But there you have it.
  3. The answer to your question is "yes". If you have 5V AC, you can absolutely use a rectifier to get DC without a transformer. There is no need for a transformer at all. I think the confusion is stemming from the fact that you do usually see a transformer before a rectifier, but only because that transformer is performing a "step-down" from a higher AC voltage to a lower AC voltage (both voltages are AC on either side of the trasnformer, before the rectifier), say from 120V AC to 30V AC. This 30V AC can then be rectified to give you a DC voltage. The order without a transformer: AC voltage --> rectifier --> DC voltage (with some ripple) The order with a transformer: AC voltage A --> transformer --> AC voltage B --> rectifier --> DC voltage (with some ripple) [A and B are the magnitudes of the AC voltages on either side of the transformer].
  4. I am not too strong when it comes to optics / lenses, but I am trying to figure out a way to get a person to be able to focus on something substantially closer than his or her point of focus. I understand this technology has been around for centuries (eyeglasses), but I am looking for a way to be able to focus on an image at a distance of about 1-2 inches from the eye. I think it has something to do with focusing the image at infinity, so the viewer doesn't have to constantly break his or her focus on the things around them to focus on the image. I think I may be able to do this by collimating the light using a fresnel lens, but I am still not sure. Can anybody offer advice? I'd love to discuss this.
