  1. The chicken that lived without a head was quite famous. It didn't actually lose all of it's head but more of a diagonal slice from top-back to bottom-front this left most of the brain stem intact and the chicken very much alive and very much pissed off. The owner kept the chicken as a showpiece and fed it by putting food down it's throat. It lived for some time and finally died when it chocked to death. It was more a case of a faceless chicken rather than headless. Insects are a completely different kettle of fish. They don't have the same nervous system with a brain as mammals do and as such loosing it doesn't have the same cataclysmic effect.
  2. Changing the AGP Aperture will affect the card in the AGP slot (geForce). The maximum aperture size is the VRAM of the card (128mb) but... I think we've found the problem in the fact that you are using "some garbage card". It's not gonna be able to do what you are asking it. Have you tried running just one of the apps on the monitor driven by the PCI card? Does it work? It may be able to run the DVD but it's going to struggle with any decent games and it's going to use more PC resources. If you want to do this properly I would look for a decent double headed AGP card. It most likely doesn't matter that you are running the other programs as, although they will be using some system resources, they aren't going to be causing the problem you're experiencing. As for the firefox comment, as scientifically minded (and therefore better ) people we enjoy seeing people using a 'real' browser!
  3. The head and the feet are where heat is lost most readily. we've touched on a cap/hat system for the head but what about cooling the feet? It's easier to hide a cooling system in trainers or boots and there a pump can very easily be built in the sole or heel powered by walking/moshing. Move a fluid around the inside of the shoe via narrow tubing and secrete some sort of heat sink in there to dissipate heat. Just a thought but it's the way I would head as the cooling probably doesn't have to be that great to provide relief and maybe wouldn't need an 'active' cooling system. Sadly, I reckon the idea is flawed from the outset though if we stick within the parameters of cooling only a small area of skin. To reduce the temperature of the entire body when it is being heated quite so much would need that small area to be cooled to an uncomfortable temperature ("Hey I feel nice and cool but if I bend my wrist my hand will snap off!"). I would go with YT's suggestion of a garment that would fit under clothing and cool more surface area although his use of the word "spandex" is utterly uncalled for and causes images of 80's rock stars strutting their stuff to come to mind. Unforgiveable YT!
  4. but not 3 on, 4 off - spread it across the week. Don't bother with supplements, they are expensive, don't do what they say, potentially harmful and a mugs game.
  5. Try setting the AGP aperture size(s) in the BIOS to the maximum supported by the video cards (the memory size of the card). It's a long shot but it'll ensure that you're using the full resources of the AGP. PS. (Mossoi's standard disclaimer when advising BIOS tinkering): Please don't blame me if this causes any problems with your PC or causes it to fail to POST. Ensure you know how to perform a hard reset on the BIOS before changing any advanced settings.
  6. Yeah, that was repeated on the Discovery channel last year. Quite interesting although a little formulaic. I would rather they had asked them to simply exist with the best possible quality of life rather than setting specific challenges.
  7. This is a very interesting point. While many of us understand to various levels the technology we use how many of us could actually reproduce these things even with modern tools? I sure as hell couldn't build a PC or the equipment needed to make the chips. I would hazard a guess to your island theory. It reckon it would take a bloody long time and we wouldn't recreate what we have today anyway. We would most likely deviate from the known as a result of the strengths and weaknesses of those who are re-inventing. As for the pyramids, they aren't really that much of a mystery. It's amazing how big an object a group of determined people can move if they want to. The Egyptians had huge resources of willing manpower and lots of time to build the things.
  8. So it is, forgot to take the 0 into account - oh well, more than ten years since I've done any of this!
  9. 123 + 456 in base 7 will yield 613 and in base 8, 602. You've given 2 versions of the question, are these correct?
  10. I would say that it's far to similar to a human skull to be anything other than a human skull.
  11. From experience Acrobat tends to do this. Personally I think it sucks as an app. but it's useful for cross platform documents. I ALWAYS avoid PDF results in Google. I know this isn't my PC because it happens on all the PC's I deal with at work and is a constant source of complaint.
  12. I believe that microprocessors consist of exclusively NAND or NOR gates as they can be used to act as any other type of gate. There's more info here: http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/gates.htm
  13. Have you got the right speaker for the frequency you are playing? I'm not too technical when it comes to this but obviously there is an optimal radius of cone for certain frequency ranges which will allow maximum acceleration.
  14. The volume of the sound increases as the displacement of the cone increases. So, yes, a higher volume means faster acceleration as the cone is moving further at the same frequency. Have you got the mix of corn starch to water correct? This looks to me like the holes and fingers effect is due to the thixotropic properties of the corn starch solution. If you need more volume you can always pass the output of the PC through a hifi amp to step it up.
  15. Déja Vu has a lot to do with this I think. See something on TV....vaguely remember it....it's almost as though you can see a second into the future....can't quite put your finger on how you remember it....must have been a dream, right? Other things like that, such as always seeing the same time on a clock, are most likely our love of seeing patterns in random distributions. You look at a clock and see 12:34 - "Wow, I looked up at exactly 1,2,3,4. Amazing! 3 days later, 12:34 again - "Oh my god, am I psychic?" Memory filters out all the times you look at the clock when it's not an interesting or repeated time - it's too boring. Let's face it we look at a clock an awful lot.
  16. A vector has magnitude with direction, scalar is just magnitude. For instance, a car moving at 50km/h can be said to have a speed of 50km/h (scalar) but we could give more information and say its velocity is 50km/h northerly which is a vector. Forces are vectors and the direction of the force makes the world of difference: Force x acts on a body pushing forwards. Force y acts pushing it backwards. The resultant force is x - y. If they were pushing it in the same direction the resultant foce would be x + y. Scalar values have no direction. A thermometer does not tell you in which direction temperature is travelling as this does not make sense. Scalars are things like temperature, pressure and speed.

  18. I agree - either largest unit to smallest or vice versa like everything else - we don't mix other scales like that.
  19. Oops - I always forget sources. Never written a paper that requires them. Here it is though: The first use of pi by Jerry Becker - http://mathforum.org/epigone/mathed-news/dragandshing
  20. 298. The sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, pi, was first used for the familiar value 3.1415=8A in the publication, "Synopsis Palmariorium Mathesios", authored by William Jones in 1706.
  21. Although cats are more active at night they are still pretty inactive when compared to other animals (although very active for their first couple of years). If you step back and look at why animals are inactive then you have to ask the question "What would they do if they rushed around all the time?" Generally all animals do enough to stay alive and stop at that, rushing around would only waste valuable energy. BTW, Tesseract, are you going for a record in pointless posts in one thread by any chance?
  22. Have you checked with your ISP to see if they'll give you a static IP? I'm hosting a couple of sites on my machine and I got a static IP for no extra cost.
  23. Do me a favour. It's an international sport played by more countries than baseball with its own world cup.
  24. Good question! I've no idea of an answer but conjecture is always good. Possibly when the sound is coming from so many sources and directions that the wave pattern that is formed is so screwed up that it's impossible to work out nodes and antinodes or to be able to distinguish one source amonst the many. Have you ever noticed that concentrating on white noise can make it seem much louder? In a silent room I can concentrate on the tiny noises generated in the ears to the point that it seems almost deafening. Maybe it's more a function of the mind rather than a physical thing?
  25. N-ISDN = Narrowband Integrated Services Digital Network ADSL = Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line Both digital not analogue hence the better speeds as data does not have to be converted into an analogue signal at either end as with dial up.
