  1. This was popular I believe in the late 1990s and probably the early 2000s.

Taken from the wiki article on ECA stacking to explain it. "The ECA stack is a drug combination used in weight loss and as a stimulant. ECA is an acronym for ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin. Dietary supplements based on or including elements of ECA were popular through the 1990s but the marketing of ephedra- or ephedrine-containing stimulant combinations for weight loss and bodybuilding is now restricted or illegal in the United States and Canada due to reports of heart attack, stroke, and death associated with these supplements".

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECA_stack

    How Does ECA Stack Work?

    Ephedrine

Ephedrine has been shown to increase the effectiveness of thermogenesis (fat burning) in the body. It has powerful effects on the cellular mechanisms that control fat release from fat cells. Some of these effects include contributing to the release and blocking the re-uptake of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. This gives norepinephrine the ability to continuously stimulate receptors in your body, causing fat cell "flood gates" to open and facilitate fat loss. The Chinese herb ma huang (Ephedra sinica) is the chief natural source of the ephedrine family of compounds, although there are other minor sources, such as Sida cordifolia.

    Caffeine

The second key thermogenic ingredient caffeine is a methylxanthine that stimulates hormone-induced fat burning. The caffeine in the ECA Stack comes from kola nut and green tea extract. Caffeine works by increasing free fatty-acid concentrations and adrenaline levels. This results in greater lipolysis (oxidation of fats for energy), which can drain your fat stores over time. This change in a muscle's utilization of energy substrates can have a profound effect on fat loss. Caffeine also heightens mental alertness, which can positively affect your motivation to exercise and create the caloric deficit needed to lose body fat.

    Aspirin

Aspirin is the popular name for acetysalicylic acid. It raises the body's internal "thermostat," so that the increased production of heat, which is typical of ECA products, does not set off alarms in the body. This allows the ephedrine and caffeine to work in your body for a longer period of time, giving you the maximum fat-burning potential.

Ephedrine is now banned in all Australian states, though an isomer known as pseudoephedrine which is available over the counter in most pharmacies in Australia (though it is highly regulated) has been suggested to be a substitute to ephedrine.

Main idea of this was taken from other 'stacking' combinations used the health community and also some of the mainstream thermogenic combination ideas used such as hydroxycut (which was banned along with its fellow ephedra based products in the early 2000s I believe).

In combination with hard training and decent dieting Im attempting the substituted ECA stack. I have already been training at the gym over the last year, so this is not purely a couch potato method to lose weight with minimal effort, simply an experiment to assess the effectiveness of this stack that is widely debated about in various groups. The substituted PE has been suggested to provide limited if at all any effect in the stack though other sources point to it increasing the effects of the caffeine.

the stack would need to be cycled 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off due to tolerance issues.

Basic idea is a ratio of 1:10:10 or 1:10:15 PE:C:A.

I have started with 30:300:300 and will monitor heat rate, fat loss, etc over a period of time. Also looking into monitoring BP, and recording any physiological effects that may be caused by the amounts of the components (especially with two being stimulants).

Main effects I am assuming will happen:

    - increase in body heat.

    - increase in shaking which was suggested a main side effect of the original ECA stack (motor agitation).

-increased energy and reduced need for sleep (for decent sleeping patterns the dose will have to be taken early in the day to prevent insomnia).

-depending on the sensitivity of the person to drugs such as caffeine, could expect psychological effects. anxiety, etc.

So ideas people. Please don't flame me with how bad this will be though I do appreciate constructive criticism.

  2. sorry the poll was mostly for interest sake on my part and didn't feel it worthy for a thread at the present moment. (especially when rights threads about homosexuality usually end up in a flame war... not talking about here but from previous experiences with other forums).

Im interested in how social factors influence or shape the LGBT youth community (youth subculture) as a whole or individually sociologically and psychologically (both would no doubt be connected).

  3. There are so many more important things to focus on rather than 'curing' homosexuality.

Do any of you have any direct objections to homosexuality and if so...why?

and does it justify 'curing' someone.

Much of this debate is caused by religious interference and a hate for something that is 'different'.

What would you say if homosexuals considered heterosexuals as something that needed 'curing'?

Just some things I thought are relevant on a more social context, I have discussed it in lectures at university. :)

  4. hey,

Im having issues with my computer on the network im on. for some reason the administrator believes my computer is trying to shutdown the network im on. They said to do a virus scan, which I did. I found nothing.

I also have a firewall active.

I often share my hard drives over the network, which people often use (could the large amount of people on my computer give the impression of supposedly attacking the network?)

and another thing is I also remote desktop connection my computer from the labs to the college alot. Whether this might do it....

So I really have no idea whats going on?

any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx

  5. Hey,

I was wondering if anyone knew the command codes to type into run directly to bring up remote desktop connection.

I live at a college at my University. I like to remote desktop my PC, so I can continue working on whatever I was doing at home between classes.

Though I dont know if it will work due to restrictions on our systems here.

They are quite annoying indeed. It seems they have restricted access to the cmd box. *sigh*

but they have the run command box, so hopefully it will help.

    Thankyou :)

  6. I quite liked ubuntu, i must say it was a great OS. my lappy seems fine with it though its big brother, my gamer desktop runs XP. :P

I wonder if they have arguments on which is better...

did anyone here find it hard to change from a Microsoft OS to a linux based OS?

  7. sodium thiosulphate is the standard way to de-chlorinate yes, BUT, the products left may not be good for the fish either, that`s why I never mentioned it.

yeah i thought of the sodium thiosulphate as well but came to the same conclusion as YT2095.

  8. Silver Nitrate is the standard test for Chlorine.

and I`m not sure about leaving it to stand for 12 hours and how efficient that is, but it is practiced by people who keep fish in tanks.

Yeah that is the purpose im testing it for.

I guess it could be it reacting with the UV light.

  9. Hey,

I have heard that removal of Cl2 can be removed from water by allowing it to sit for 12 hours or more. I was wondering how this works. I have set it up and was also wondering if anyone knows of any technique to detect Cl in liquids.

  10. hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with these questions. if you could give me an explanation as to why it would be great. Just some questions I have been having difficulty in solving.

How many lone pairs of electrons are on the sulfur atom in SO2?

What is the expected number of valence electrons for a group 3A element?

Use VSEPR theory to predict the molecular geometry HCN.

The molecular geometry of a molecule whose central atom has four single bonds and two lone pairs of electrons is ________.

In valence bond theory, a p bond is described as the sideways overlap of two unhybridised ________ orbitals.

How many sigma (s) bonds and pi (p) bonds are in acetone?

    Give (a) the symbol and

    (b) the name for the element corresponding with the following characteristics:

The element whose electron configuration is [Ne]3s23p2

    Give (a) the symbol and

    (b) the name for the element corresponding with the following characteristics:

The element with the highest first ionisation energy in Group 7A

    Thanks :)

  11. Interesting idea. That might be kinda fun. We could cover some of the more interesting threads currently under discussion.

One of the biggest problems I think our members have is digging through subforums to find interesting threads in subject areas that they might not normally delve into. Hearing someone talk about what makes thus-and-such thread interesting might help there.

It could also cover major science news stories and such as well, of course, and that would probably be your primary focus.

Yeah that sounds great :D It would really move scienceforums.net as a resource and also as a collective of people interested in science.

  12. differences in water qualities in different locations for example the great barrier reef and the central coast of NSW. they would probably have different amounts of trace elements, etc? This is in relation to using bought salt from Shops with trace elements etc (using money) or getting water from the local beaches around the central coast (free). this water is much cooler, i believe that any bacteria whether good or bad will probably die from the temperature change and the temperature will probably effect the concentration of trace elements etc in the water. Note: this tank is a great barrier reef style tank.

    So what is everyones opinion

  13. hi,

    1. i was wondering if anyone has any ideas about what kinds of graphs i could do with these experiments.

It is in relation to corrosion and shipwrecks and salvage.

the experiment is certain metals and there relation to substances.

    metals are:

    Cu

    Al

    Zn

    Fe

    Pb

    Mg

    the substances are:

    NaOH (of unknown concentration)

    HCl

    H2SO4

    distilled water

    NH4

(if anyone else can think of any other substances that would be good, please go ahead and tell me)

The metals are put in tests tubes with each individual substance the results are tabled.

What kind of things could graphs be used for?

2.Does anyone here know how to write the perfect aim?

    3. what variables that will affect the investigation?

    4. controls needed to make the results valid.

Any ideas of other type of experiments that could be used to show corrosion, etc in relation to ship wrecks, rusting, etc.

    thank you very much
