  1. Sargent Welch, you need to buy their catelogue, their web site does not have all products. http://www.sargentwelch.com
  2. COuld a stiff hair gel, and maybe spray help the crystals stay together?????
  3. it has been a day now, in the low 90 deg. F. EDIT: And it has been 1 and 1/2 days, I still cease to notice any growth?? Can YT explain this? I think there is only one culpret for this, and that is the culture medium. Did i put in bad nutrients, as stated above (I have added these nutrients to my gelatin: Sugar adipic acid sodium citrate fumaric acid a tiny bit of salt)
  4. Ummmmm, I am not sure if i see signs of bacteria, I see a VERY VERY faint (could be anything) cloud. I have added these nutrients to my gelatin: Sugar adipic acid sodium citrate fumaric acid a tiny bit of salt Could any of those be stopping the bacterium from growing????????? Are they way too acidic???? Help will be appreciated
  5. Oh one more thing YT Would hair spray do the same thing as the varnish sprays???
  6. Howbout you build a mini mag-lev train (or small car) You dont even need electromagnets. just buy a strip of magnets (its like a ribbon), and glue it on to a plank of wood. Make sure one polarity is facing the wood, and the other the air. Then do the same on a small car that is a VERY SMALL fraction of an inch smaller in qidth then the wood. Buy some alumnum (or just take 2 more planks of wood, and glue them to the two sides of the original plank.) The car should be able to just fit between your big "semi-box:)" It should levetate if you have done everything correctly.
  7. hmmmmmm, maybe you could try making an electric motor? The uses are very practical, its a relatively safe project, and pretty cheap. Here is a small example, of course there are MANY variations (I did a project like this back in 5th grade as well) http://fly.hiwaay.net/~palmer/motor.html That one can be made with simple items, yet this one is a little more in depth. http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/HSCmotors.html And http://howthingswork.virginia.edu/electric_motors.html Those have some interesting information if you want to do electric motors Good luck:)
  8. Scale wise, the big one is about 4 to 5 inches long, by about 1.5 inches, and and inch or so high. The smaller ones are roughly an inch by an inch, to 1 X 2 inches. Will the varnish sprays not dissolve the crystals, or will they do it so little that it wont be noticable? And thanks for the comment.
  9. ummm, I am a pretty impatient scientist:) but, it has been a day, and I have not seen any growth. I prepared them (bacterium) by: making lime flavored gelatin, which was poured into a new petre dish. The gelatin set, and I took a swab of saliva, a swab from outside on rocks, plants, and other things, and I lightly pressed my finger on the dish. I put all three samples in three "corners" of the petre dish. I then put the dish by my radiator (a foot or two away), which is at a pretty constent temperature, at around body temperature. I have waited a day (is this no long enough to see anything at all?) and the dish is virtually spotless to the naked eye. SHould this be???? Am I doing something wrong??? I dont see any traces of microbes or bacterium w/ naked eye, they are still there, right?
  10. I just did a crysstal making experiment and it went a little wacky. I used Magnesium Sulphate and created a super-saturatedd solution. Let it crystalie for a couple of weeks, and I have HUGE GREAT CRYSTALS. However, there is also a HUGE problem. He crystals are sooooooooooooooo fragile, that even if I ligtly touch them, they seem to fall apart. Is there any way tat I can preserve the crystals. Could I coat them with something, to make them stifer? please help me preserve these beuties!!?
  11. Oh, and if i used lime nutrients, would that be a little to acidic for them, i only included a TINY drop. Plus, will some sunlight be good for them (like it is for plants and humans supplying us w/ vitemin D) or should the bacterium be kept in the dark???
  12. hmmm, if i store the bacteria over my radiator, do ya think that should be good, as a matter a-fact, i think ilkl take to temperature readings now
  13. Oh, wait and one more thing, would room temperature be good for growing baterium (about 65-70Degrees F) or should i incubate? The bacterium will come from my hands, and maybe seliva. And maybe even from outside. If i shoud incubate, how should I do ths, i dont really have a professional incubater
  14. and I woud just boil the geletin, and pour it in my peetry dish? and then smear on the bacteria whebn the geletin dries?
  15. Ok, well, how would i prepre some geliton, and could I get it from jello???
  16. So... Where can I get Xanthan gum, from household items? How should I prepare it all as a gell, could you give me a brief procedure. Plz. Thanks.
  17. I am planning on doing an experiment of culturing microbes from my hands. I do not have agar gel, is there a substitute for agar gel that I can use for the bacterium. Does yogart work for this? And if so, how should it be prepared?
  18. hmmmm, well a little unrelated, but if I have an outlet with a lot of appliances plugged into it, and it is kinda close to my head when I sleep, is it safe radiation wise. Could it cause brain cancer or damage after long term exposure??? If so, how else could this radiation affect you, and bacteria, (now im thinking up experiments )
  19. Here (EDIT: YT), this is a GREAT site for a good summary on how it all began . It has some interesting pics (not photos of course:)) http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/universe/historysans.html
  20. 1: Imaging technology is great because cardiologists can see if there are any irregularities, problems, holes, damage, odd beat patterns, and MUCH MUCH MORE in the heart, without taking a scalpel and choping you open YOu can see the heart from all angles with sonar technology (what they put by pregnant womans stomaches to see the baby) andf you can even see inside the heart. It is perfct for diagnossing any disorder or disease. 2: I am not quite sure, but i think fetuses are over-sensitive to most things in the mother's body. 3: X-Rays are bad for pregnant woman because a fetus is very sensitive to radiation in high frequencies, like X-rays. The radiation may harm the fetus if it is not properly protected, when the mother has x-rays. The fetus may develop cancer, tomors, growth irregularities, die, orbasically become a mutant. ALL BECAUSE the X-rays alter DNA. 4: Not all radiation is bad. For example, humans NEED some radiation from the sun to survive. SOME solar radiation helps humans develop. It provides viteman D, which in the long run prevents depression, and helps bone growth, and overall health. I hope that helps you
  21. OH WAIT,never mind, all of the sudden, it is working now!!! Thats odd.
  22. it would basically remain the same, WITHOUT ANY MOVEMENT, yet there is movement, so atoms would fly all over the place everywhere, I dont beleive your table there wioll be hard, planets will fall apart etc.
