  1. "Major depressive disorder (also known as clinical depression, major depression, unipolar depression, or unipolar disorder) is a mental disorder characterized by an all-encompassing low mood accompanied by low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities." There is a Wikipedia page about it here if you wish to learn more about it. For a 5th grader you do have an varied mix of scientific interests, much as I did at your age; I wanted to learn more about everything, and still do. It's a great thing that you show such interest. Do bear in mind though, that this is a scientific discussion forum. So think carefully before posting and maybe consider the following criteria: Is my post my own work? i.e. not something I've copied, or just a link to another page Is my post something which others may not have thought of? Using a search engine such as Google is something we can al do. Posting search results doesn't envoke scientific discussion. Is my post researched? If you make a claim, it helps to back it up somehow. Is my post a question? Posting a statement which people are already aware of is unlikely to produce much discussion Is my post of interest to others in the scientific community? You may have something on your mind which to you may be interesting, but doesn't provoke much scientific or intellectual discussion Is my post a hypothesis? If it is, others may refute it, so you may have to change your hypothesis Am I prepared to be proven wrong? it may be that a notion you had about something is proven wrong or incomplete. being proven to be wrong can be as educationally valuable as being proven right. keep reading and learning
  2. The first picture you have of the sun is - as far as I'm aware - what the sun looks like in when photographed in infra red. So technically, it doesn't look like that to the human eye. In the visible light spectrum it appears as a bright yellow, almost white, ball. I agree though to giving children access to scientific data about the world around them.
  3. If the purpose of the experiment is to see how far up the other side the ball rolls. Could you not use a U shape? a bit like a skateboarding half-pipe. Or does the ball have to roll back and forth utilising the 3D shape of the bowl?
  4. How about a library? they're free too. Some libraries are better than others, but they don't cost anything, plus they offer a variety of other services. If you're o.k paying a small fee, try a good bookshop. There are a few near me in which I spend hours reading; usually culminating in the purchase of one or two books. "If you want to socialise and make friends, go to school. If you want an education, go to a library." Winston Churchill
  5. A book I've recently read called A users guide to the brain, by John Ratey (ISBN 978-0-349-11296-1) Would be a great place to start. It looks into how we think the way we do and what processes make these thing happen. It does mention the firing of neurons and chemical reactions a bit, but that is necessary to explain how we think about things. Give it a shot, it's well worth a read.
  6. I suppose a conservative apologists view would be that by preserving traditional social, economic and political systems, one is relying on tried and tested methods. That said however, the trying and the testing aspect would more likely be carried out by non-conservatives. Moreover, what counts as 'Tradition' is very much a subjective opinion; both personally and chronologically. Me and my colegues have a kebab every Friday night, which is a tradition going back a few years. We traditionally have turkey at Christmas; a tradition going back over 100 years.
  7. The sun, (including its core) is made up of hydrogen and helium (hydrogen changing to helium in a thermonuclear reaction The Earth's outer core is made from molten iron I believe (Generating a magnetosphere) Its inner core being solid. Generally speaking, all normal matter is a/the source of gravity. Whether it be a planetary core, stella core; planet or sun as a whole. If there is matter - i.e. stuff- there is gravity. the more stuff there is; the more gravity, and the closer one is to said stuff; the more gravity is felt. "Can there be more than one source of gravity?" Yes. e.g. The bottle of Les Beauchamp Sauvignon Blanc sat in front of me is a source of gravity, as is the glass of wine next to it. Although their gravitational effects are too weak to be noticed by me. I do however notice the effect of the earth's gravity, pulling me down into my seat. The Earth being of much greater mass than the wine bottle. The illustration below shows how each body of mass has its own gravitational field as it bends space/time around it. The above is just a quick overview of the topics you've raised. There are many highly qualified individuals on SFN who can probably explain things in more detail and to a greater degree of accuracy. p.s. First post I see... And in no way nonsensical. One can only learn by either questioning or doing things. Welcome to SFN
  8. I didn't realise my little poem would cause such a debate. The concept/word I had in mind was speed. velocity would have done equally as well. Speed will help you escape a predator to employ speed will help to ensure a task is expediently dealt with. whether that be speed of thought or speed of action The universal constant being the speed of light, which Eistein used in E=MC2 I should have written distance over time rather than time over distance The former doesn't fit the poem's syllabic rhythm quite so well but would have been more technically correct. Here's another Without it, life wouldn't be here A major ingredient in beer at zero, you get triple points It helps oxidise iron levers and joints Inhale it and you just might die it precipitates and humidifies.
  9. Well, sort of by definition, pleasure is good (Provided it doesn't interfere with the pleasure or well being of others.) How sad to feel this way. I'm here chiefly to have fun and to live for the benefit of others; The universe is my amusement park. One should look at it more often, it's a great place. On occasion, yes. It would be a bit like college I suppose, and would surely be better than being in a media/doctrine induced stupor and having wars in the street.
  10. Thought I'd keep in... This is my design as seen on the new style SFN pages. Keeping the Golden Ratio Idea, (Golden ratio being present Science, nature, art, maths biology, physics, infinite but bounded, simple yet complex etc etc) both with and without contoured edges. have a looky.
  11. The definition... An insistence -- arising naturally from within a sentient being -- to ensure the continued existence and well-being of something, and to experience its presence, in order to both calm/relieve that insistence and bask in it. The word is ___? Is the word "Happiness"? or maybe consciousness Merged post follows: Consecutive posts mergedI'll have a go #5 A useful response to a threat From a predator who's appetite is whet Its employment is expedient In thought, action or movement Albert's constant thought and when time over distance is sought.
  12. If the universe was designed and if that design has a purpose (Not a model I subscribe to) But if it did; it could be said that the universe - out of necessity - created a way for it to know itself. I.e. We are part of said universe and through science and maths, Hubble telescopes and Hadron colliders and all, we can understand the universe. And since we are part of the universe, it could be said to be understanding and comprehending itself. And maybe, years into the future when we/life/the universe are sufficiently intelligent to figure out exactly what it's all for, we/it will come up with a way to create a small big bang style singularity and send it back in time about 14 billion years and start the whole thing off in the first place.
  13. Just pulled this from timeanddate.com I only live a little way from the Greenwich meridian (The zero line) It seems the nearest I got to Equal Night (Equinox) was on The 18th. hmmmm. 13 Mar 2010 06:19 18:01 11h 41m 49s + 3m 58s 12:10 35.7° 148.693 14 Mar 2010 06:17 18:03 11h 45m 48s + 3m 58s 12:09 36.1° 148.734 15 Mar 2010 06:15 18:04 11h 49m 46s + 3m 58s 12:09 36.5° 148.774 16 Mar 2010 06:12 18:06 11h 53m 44s + 3m 58s 12:09 36.9° 148.815 17 Mar 2010 06:10 18:08 11h 57m 42s + 3m 58s 12:08 37.3° 148.856 18 Mar 2010 06:08 18:09 12h 01m 41s + 3m 58s 12:08 37.7° 148.897 19 Mar 2010 06:06 18:11 12h 05m 39s + 3m 58s 12:08 38.1° 148.937 20 Mar 2010 06:03 18:13 12h 09m 37s + 3m 58s 12:08 38.5° 148.978 21 Mar 2010 06:01 18:15 12h 13m 36s + 3m 58s 12:07 38.8° 149.019 22 Mar 2010 05:59 18:16 12h 17m 34s + 3m 58s 12:07 39.2° 149.060 23 Mar 2010 05:56 18:18 12h 21m 32s + 3m 57s 12:07 39.6° 149.101 24 Mar 2010 05:54 18:20 12h 25m 30s + 3m 58s 12:06 40.0° 149.143 If you were in Moscow on the 18th, you'd have been treated to nearly exactly 12 hours of sunlight and 12 of darkness (With the difference of a few seconds)
  14. I'd start the calendar on February 3rd 1979. Technically, I only have peoples word for it that anything existed prior to that date. Plus it probably the most momentous day in all human history when two asteroids collided over Portsmouth some 31 years ago and I was created. Failing that idea - which may not be too popular - we could adopt the calendar's start, to be the day this thread was created. Maybe with a "BT" and "AT" system (Before thread, after thread.)
  15. Couldn't quite get the golden dection mapped in 3D whilst keeping the brain image smooth. There's no distinct alpha channel on the golden section image, so the brain image wont site in the background properly. i tried it without brain image though; it looks like this
  16. here is a cross section of the spinal cord. it's roughly divided between left and right and sub-divided between motor and sensory, within each half. I believe this map also correlates to the map of the Medulla at the base of the brain/top of the spinal chord
  17. Thanks for the font. I've added it, plus done a few tweeks
  18. If you could let me know where I can obtain the right .TTF font, that would be great. I'll stick it in to the logo. I'll also tidy up a few of the loose edges around the skull. I also played around with putting the golden section graphic through a Mandelbrot fractal program to create something possibly usable as a page background or maybe a dividing line.
  19. Actually, you've explained it better than the wiki page (Which I read top to bottom previously) I was unaware of some of the finer points of the Monty Hall game, namely at what point in time choices occur, and when boxes are opened/chosen and by whom. Thanks for the explanation, I love to learn. To be proven wrong as as insightful as to be proven right. I wonder, are there any other mathematical probability anomalies which would make a good TV game show?
  20. Just thought I'd keep in the game. I did a few adjustments, and spent a little more time. I've done one logo in Black and one in blue Have a look...
  21. I see. but, if when the third-to-last case was opened and when that case had the lowest amount. if we (As the audience) were to observe the banker consistently offering the switch. might that indicate that the banker has foreknowledge of which box contains which amount? That is, in this scenario, the contestant is effectively opening the low-amount-box on behalf of the banker. The banker knows what is in every box and so invokes the Monty Hall. Also, is knowing where the prize isn't as advantageous as knowing where the prize is? I can't see the real difference between 'make a deal' and 'deal or no deal' In both cases 1 contestant chooses a box 2 bad box is opened 3 host offers a switch
  22. The 'cents' axis represents the musical scale, which is divided into 1200 cents. There are 100 cents between each semitone. Notice that each of the markers (1200, 2400, 3600 & 4800) are each marked underneath each 'C' note. They are evenly spaced on the Cents axis. Each time we go up an octave, we double the frequency, giving us the exponential curve illustrated in the graph. Each vertical dotted line represents a key on a piano keyboard. In the graph, only the white keys are illustrated by dots.
  23. But in Deal or no deal, the host does know which box has the smaller prize, albeit at the same time as the contestant. The host or 'Banker' doesn't always offer the option to switch unless the third-to-last box is a low number. e.g. There are three boxes left [1p] [£1000] & [250000] If the contestant opens the [1p] box the banker will offer the contestant the chance to switch, if they open either of the other two, he wont offer the switch. Would the Monty hall effect still work if the host knows which one of the boxes which has the lower prize?
  24. Any note can be produced from a length of pipe such as a clarinet (Or in my case, saxophone) The note depends on the distance between the reed and the nearest open hole. If I play a middle C. there's about six inches of pipe in operation between the reed and the hole The 1st, 3rd and 5th denote musical terms which are more useful and easier to understand from the musicians point of view (Rather than writing the actual frequencies or ratios in full. the 1st 3rd and 5th can be any number of frequencies, depending on the tuning and which scale you're using. e.g. in C major, the 1st 3rd and 5th would be C, E and G or 261Hz, 327Hz and 392Hz or 1:1, 81:64, 3:2 In F major they would be F, A and C, or 359Hz, 392Hz and 523Hz or 1:1, 81:64, 3:2 (Notice how the 1st and fifth are much simpler ratios, they exist in every musical culture) I've added this image below to illustrate the relationships between notes
