  1. First post here! Some people use Platinum Bright Embers as replacement catalyst (they pack it in a small stainless steel coil spring. PBE is typically used for creating flickering flames in gas fireplaces. In hand warmer use it just catalyzes without producing flame. PBE will work, but the catalyst from "mparam" (Mountain Parameters) is better! Mparam is run by a gentleman in Canada that specializes in DIY rebuilding of hand warmers (and other things too). He sells warmers as well as all the items you might need to rebuild any brand you may own. He's got catalyst, coil springs (to hold the catalyst), carbon felt, deodorizer, etc. His website is mparam.com He has a lot of videos on YouTube, (also under mparam) showing testing and modifications. Lastly, if you need a new hand warmer, and want the "best", check out the model named S-Boston. It can be turned off and the reservoir sealed by flipping the cap so you don't lose fuel in between uses. It also has a built-in AAA battery powered starter. Push a button, and the hand warmer starts to catalyse by way of a glowing coil. No lighter necessary. The batteries are used solely for lighting the unit, not for producing heat. Everything is self contained. Best thing is this unit heats up to 155°F to 160°F and will run longer than most on a similar fill. Zippos run at around 120°F and if cold-shocked (even using your cold hands), they go out. The S-Boston just keeps on running.
