  1. An effective teacher needs to be strict but not so rigid that they can't compromise or bend if needed. An effective teacher needs to be firm and have classroom control but also be warm and open enough to have a good relationship with his/her students. A good teacher needs to be interesting and innovative, but not lose sight of the main goal (for example: they shouldn't create such an interesting lesson on the 50s that the students walk away remembering the Elvis songs but not the historical information about the beatniks and counterculture). A good teacher should be willing to listen and give advice, but not cross the line from mentor to peer. A good teacher should be fair and even handed and not dole out different consequences for different kids. A good teacher should make all kids think he/she likes them even though there will invariably be ones she really doesn't like. A good teacher should realize that even though the bell may ring at 3pm signaling the end of the day, that he/she should be willing to give up his/her time and stay late in order to help students. A good teacher should plan his/her lessons in advance and put thought into them instead of just coming in unprepared and wasting his/her time, the kids' time and the school's time. I realize that teachers don't get paid enough to do all of the stuff that "good teachers" should do, but if we did this job for the money, no one would do it. We teach because we love it.
  2. The Society meets on Sunday mornings, provides guinea pigs for your favorite pot luck dishes, and a network of friends for when you are in need. It also has counselors and ceremonies for life transitions such as birth, mating and death. It provides parents with help in bringing up their children to be civilized human beings. For atheists, agnostics and the independent thinker of a spiritual bent, shouldn't it be considered a valid alternative to joining a religion you can't really embrace wholeheartedly? lupinesidhe, the primary difference is the intellectual and spiritual freedom, the freedom of interpretation. I consider that a very critical difference. Some members believe in one or more gods in some form or other, and some do not. It's a very accepting group, although the one thing it is NOT accepting about is unethical (i.e., unjust, uncaring, intolerant) behavior. Update 2: I have to admit that I'm in a unique position here, as the Ethical Society of St. Louis is one of the largest, maybe even the largest in the country. But there's also an on-line society, eswow.org which is "Ethical Society Without Walls."

  4. Very interesting opinions! Art in science is important, and what about classic literature in science? Recently reread Fahrenheit 451 and found an interesting article about Technology and Society in Fahrenheit 451 check this link URL deleted What you think about this?
  5. Yeah, I definitely know what youre talking about. It's the opposite for me - I LOVE english and writing classes, but I detest math and have absolutely no use for it in my daily routing. Every morning in math class I literally want to kill myself or break the desk. JK. But its a waste of time. High school just sets you up for anything and everything. Classes range from Tech to Dance to Art to Math to Science to COOKING CLASS (it exists, pathetic) to Chemistry to Calculus to Yearbook. Once highschool is over, and your freshman year of college, you can pick the classes you WANT. It'll be awesome. And don't worry, your career will come to you. You have time to figure it out, it's not as demanding as you think. Some people dont figure it out till 2nd year college.
  6. you put a very good question. i will try to answer your question. generally, the life is to live happily. my purpose on life is different from you. your purpose will be different from others. i said the purpose of life is to live happily and to achieve peace of mind. i am seeing the happiness in my purpose, and you are seeing the happiness in some angles. i need not accept your purpose and you need not accept my purpose. so, commonly we take what is the real purpose of life. That is the meaning of life. what is the purpose of life then ? The purpose of life constitutes a philosophical question concerning the purpose and significance of life or existence in general. This concept can be expressed through a variety of related questions, such as Why are we here?, What is life all about?, and What is the meaning of it all? It has been the subject of much philosophical, scientific, and theological speculation throughout history. There have been a large number of answers to these questions from many different cultural and ideological backgrounds. A person's life has purpose for himself, others as the life events resulting from his achievements, legacy, family, etc., but, to say that life, itself, has meaning. we can live as we wish or we can live for some purpose. Life is not for purpose, but there is purposes in life. Why do people love each other? Because love leads to sexual intercourse, which contributes to the population of the human species. Why do mothers love babies before they are even born? Because it contributes to the maintenance and increase of the population of the human species. Why are so many people against abortion? Because it is a deterrent to procreation. Why are there so many doctors and so much medicine? To maintain the population of the human species. Why is murder such a big crime? Finally, so whatever your motivation – hold onto your seat! We are in for a ride, because finding the meaning of life is the most exciting and rewarding adventure of them all! until you discover the purpose of your life, you are living a life of mediocrity. Rise and be great, do the great things you were meant to do. Look deep inside you, realize what is your lifes purpose and your meaning of life and when you do find purpose, you discover yourself to be a greater person than you ever dreamed yourself to be. The world you live in will never be the same and the opportunities life throws at you will be abundant. The Meaning of Life will be clear. The ultimate goal of life is to get peace of mind. we can get anything in life except peace of mind because we aim to live in life conveniently, but the goal of life is different from purpose or meaningful life. if we are happy in life, we get peace of mind. Not sure if I can make it interesting...but i want to be the best father, best husband and best relation together with best friendship with good name in the society. I would say that the Ultimate Goal is described as the Good, and we are like Plato and thing happiness is a side-effect of that. Aristotle seems to aim right at happiness. But Plato says the Good and he makes more sense to me. Thanks for the opportunities and hope this will help you !!!
  7. If you want to treat patients, you need a medical degree. That's 4 years of college (any major and the premed classes, high GPA, good MCAT scores), 4 years of med school, and 4 years of residency in oncology (you don't have to find a school with a good oncology program until after med school, not after high school). You get paid during residency, but not much. If you want to do research, you need a PhD. That's 4 years of college (bio or biochem major is good, high GPA, high GRE and subject GRE scores, research experience in your field) and 4-8 years of grad school for the masters and PhD (it's not a set length program; there are courses, qualifying exams, and 1-2 theses/dissertations including original research in the field). Getting a PhD takes long in school on average, but it's cheaper - science grad programs pay YOU to get your PhD, so you graduate with much less in loans than a doctor. However, you'd also make much less money with a PhD than an MD. Either way, you should start at the best college you can get into. With a 3.3, that's not a fantastic school, but maybe a good state school or not-top liberal arts college.
