  1. Hi there, Normal animal cells such as a cell in the arm has a very standard shape and contain a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and some other organelles. Plant cells also have a cell wall surrounding the cell membrane as well as chloroplasts for photosynthesis and a permanent vacuole which contains cell sap and other liquids. From my knowledge there are 2 types of cell-eukaryotic and prokaryotic, eukaryotic cells are cells such as animal and plant cells, prokaryotic cells are cells such as bacteria. Cells are quite complex but depending on what level you are learning from you learn different organelles in each of them. This is from an A level standard. Hope that answers most of your question. This clip should help some more.....https://www.khanacademy.org/science/high-school-biology/hs-cells/hs-basic-cell-structures/v/introduction-to-the-cell
  2. Hello, I wasn't sure if this should go there but it was my best guess. I love reading the 'New scientist' magazines and I have a big collection of them, however, as they are very detailed and have a lot of information in them I find it really difficult to remember what I have read. I think this is because of my dyslexia or it might happen to a lot of other non dyslexic people but I was wondering if you all have some helpful tips to help. I would love to be able to read the magazines and all the information just get absorbed into my head. I know that the brains memory is never that good though. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Hi there, I thought that this would be an interesting topic to discuss with some other minds as I came across the idea on holiday when there were a lot of them. Mosquitoes are to me the most annoying insect in the world as they only seem to be keen on biting humans, if we were to have the means to completely eradicate them from the planet how would the ecosystem be affected by the change, surely whatever the mosquitoes predator is can easily find another main meal to survive on. I hope this is a good topic to discuss
  4. Hello everyone, randomly thought of this question when I got one of these- a mind blank. What causes them? I asked my biology teacher and he said that "it is caused by hormones made when you are stressed eg adrenaline, epinephrine and cortisol that affect your ability to remember things properly. These chemicals muddle up the brain." He also suggested that I put the question on here as a final discussion. Before I got this answer I thought that it is something related to chemicals blocking memories or chemicals blocking cognitive function which is essentially the same as the answer. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Live long and prosper.
  5. Hello everyone, hope that you are enjoying the hot weather if you have any. It's come up recently about milk being more hydrating than water, a link will below to see the page that showed it. Then I hear that milk can be very bad for you as it can lead to certain cancers or bone issues. I just wanted to ask some other people what the story is for this liquid as I'm sure a lot of people like to consume it once in a while. Hope it's not too strange. http://uk.businessinsider.com/milk-water-drinks-research-hydration-powerade-orange-juice-2016-7 -Milk being good for you link http://www.peta.org/living/food/reasons-stop-drinking-milk/ -Milk being bad for you link Thanks in advance

    AQA Biology

Hello. As you may or may not know GCSE students around the Uk (I included) had to sit an exam on Unit 1A Biology this Tuesday (17th May). There were one or two questions that seemed a little odd to put in the paper however afterwards a lot of the students got angry at AQA (the exam board). Apparently, they have started a petition of around 2,000 people demanding an apology from AQA but I'm not all too sure. One of the questions was along the lines of " A drug is tested by an independent company. What is meant by an independent company?". Now this was a little strange but I can understand its placing in the paper. The second question that created anger from students was about a graph given that showed the results from a survey of 100 15-year-old boys and 15-year-old girls and what their favourite alcoholic drink was. Now this was taken badly as it seemed to encourage underage drinking. The categories in the graph were things like spirits, beers, wine etc. Now obviously 15-year-olds should not really be exposed to these things yet in my opinion, so I wanted to ask what your thoughts were on this if you have heard of it. If not then please have a look at the articles that I have provided. Hope that this doesn't sound too crazy but I thought that its relevance and popularity deserves a place on the forum. Thank you. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2016/05/17/students-left-fuming-over-gcse-biology-exam-that-contained-quest/ http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/aqa-exam-students-left-baffled-after-business-studies-question-appears-on-biology-paper-a7034816.html
  7. Also, it is worth mentioning that dreams are more likely to occur in colder rooms. http://www.tydknow.com/did-you-know-that-sleeping-in-a-cold-room-increases-the-chances/

    Dreams

A dream that I have had multiple times is myself cycling off a small cliff into the river Thames on a cloudy day. It always spooks me.
  9. Hello, Are we more likely to get bad dreams when we are younger? Is it something to do with the person's knowledge about the dream itself and their belief that it is real, not too sure. Thanks in advance
  10. I can also only suggest this website but overall I think that some plants do have digestive systems but not all. This should explain some of it: https://www.quora.com/Why-dont-plants-need-a-digestive-system

    Breathing

Hello, just wondering about something I came across. Why does the pulse slow down quickly after physical exertion when breathing through your nose. My theory is along the lines of less oxygen per second so that the cardiovascular system conserves energy by slowing the pulse. Could anyone clarify, thank you in advance:).

    Mind Palaces

Hi there, I was wondering about the topic of mind palaces mainly seen in recent Sherlock Holmes films and TV series. From what I have heard some people can do something like this with memory where they take a piece of information and add it to a mental room like an office and imagine them adding the information to a file or draw. This is I believe is called the method of loci. What I don't understand is if this method developed by the Ancient Romans and Greeks can be used by anyone or only specific people that are born intelligent. Hope this makes sense, all comments welcome
  13. This is not intended to be sexist in any way. However I notice that women are most of the time colder than males, is it something to do with muscle mass or fat stores. Looking forward to feedback.
  14. http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2015/05/08/sitting-too-long.aspx This is a appropriate article and the video also helps with the understanding.
  15. This is a discussion. We know from studies that sitting down for more than 5,6 hours a day can decrease life expectancy. A lot of that sitting down is at schools and universities (around 7 hours a day) which could do negatively for their future. Another point to consider is that some children are more active than others with some returning from school just go straight back to sitting down for homework. My question for you is: Do you think that we could increase life expectancy marginally or at all by getting children at schools to do more standing up during lessons (especially in double lessons) and to be more active during school time?. This would also go along with living in a time with the best medical treatment in history. I look forward to hearing your feedback on this topic.
  16. Hello Lepton, I'm no expert but I have covered this before. You just have to remember the 3 conditions needed for decomposition (heat, oxygen and moisture). Non biodegradable products must either have no fuel, or not much moisture inside them, the material could also be physically hard which means that decomposes will have a harder time breaking down the material.
  17. Thank you everybody for replying, these are usually questions that I think of and would usually ask my biology teacher so thank you again. I do agree with the adrenaline side of things because usually dreams happen subconsciously and would not make the brain perceive it a truly real (as it is busy performing other tasks). Look forward to discussing more topics.
  18. Hello everybody I'm new to this website but my teacher recommended it to me. My theory for this question is that our brain perceives it as real information so when we die e.g. fall of a cliff and hit the water the body goes into shock which causes awakening. Another idea is that this has something to do with adrenaline in the body. Hope someone can weigh in on this topic. Thank you.
