  1. Transformers only work with alternating currents (AC).

Speakers only work off alternating currents.

    A battery supplies direct current.

Therefore niether a transformer or speaker will not work off a battery.

Now if you pulse the battery through the transformer or speaker (disconnect and reconnect the battery led) you should get some output (the speaker will make pop sounds, the transformer will supply a short burst of current).

If you could connect and disconnect the battery very quickly (60 times a second) your radio would work just fine, but this takes years of practice. I takes a heck of a lot of videogame playing to get your fingers to move that fast.

  2. If just one of those LEDs go dead, so will the rest. That's gotta be crappy to debug should that ever happen.

Right now I'm building a 32 LED * 32 LED matrix (thats a 1024 LEDs). If I ever get it done, I'll post some pictures.

  3. Again, if the rock was radioactive enough to emit visiable light, your grandparents would have been dead in pretty quick fasion. Your not going to get cancer a few years later from it. You're going to die in a matter of days, mostly from radiation burns. Also a rock that radioactive will also be very hot to the touch, if not hot enough to burn through things like wood and the like. Was there any mention of anything like that?

I seriously doubt the rock in question was a 'hollywood-style' glowing radioactive rock.

  4. Wasn't this thread about YT's possible Plutonium he had?

If you guys want to continue your pissing contest over DU and other radiologic hazards I suggest you start a new thread. Failing that, this thread will be locked like the other.

  5. Radium itself doesn't glow without the aid of Phosphorus.

If the rock itself was radioactive and glowing, they wouldn't have to worry about cancer. They would have died from radiation poisoning long before cancer.

  6. So few people consider the human problems with traveling at near c. Do you realize that any light that happen to bounce up off the road and back at you would be blue-shifted to the point they'ed appear as gamma-rays. You wouldn't see them, but you'd feel them as you cooked.

Another one of my favorite question answer/pairs for quatum mechanics goes something like this.

Q: Your standing on a long road with two cars headed towards you. The first car speeds up to 65 mph. The second car starts a few seconds later but instantaiously speeds up to the speed of light. At the point the faster car overtakes the slower they both turn on thier headlights. Which car's headlights do you see first?

    A. Niether. Your body gets smeared all over the cosmos when it's struck by the car with infinate mass traveling at the speed of light. The light speed car would reach you at the same instance the light did.

  7. Use a resistor. Why do you want to do otherwise?

It's not like resistors cost a whole bunch. If you get them in bulk it's less than half a cent (US) a piece. If you get them at radioshack it's like 10 for a $1.

If you can't spend a dollar to mod a computer should you be modding it?? :P

  8. Now I could see solar cells and things like LEDs being made from DU Oxide semiconductors, I don't think you'll see many logic circuits come from this stuff.

Stray radiation has the nasty habit of forcing electrons into the conducton band, or in other words, your gates would randomly go into conduct when excited by radiation.

  9. Depleted uranium is also used for radiation shielding, such as the caste used to store highly radioactive waste and medical sources.

DU is also used in some x-ray equipment. (http://www.varian.com/osup/sup257.html)

I even heard at some point during the late 50s and early 60s, DU was used for the little weights placed inside spraypaint cans to mix up the paint, of course this is no longer done.

  10. Are you talking about using a farnsworth fuser to inject neutrons into some du?

If so, you forgot to add a little deterium/tritum gas to your vacuum chamber. The neutrons have to be liberated from somewhere.

Parafin wax also makes a great neutron moderator. It easier to work with than carbon fiber cloth. Beryllium can also be used to greatly increase your neutron yeild.

I still think it would take an long time to breed a considerable amount of U235 from a lump of DU. Does anyone have actual number we could work with here? I'm sick of all the 'should's 'could's and 'I think's (my own included).

  11. With all that mass behind it, if it had struck the iceberg head on it would have probably crushed a fourth of the ship.

I also agree. Somewhere I saw a video clip where a loaded barge struck a bridge at a mesley 5 mph, but wouldn't you know, it pulverized the piling and caused a span of the bridge to collapse.

With the titanic were talking about a bigger boat and a faster speed.

It was traveling around 20.5 knots when it hit the iceburg (10.5 meters/second) and the boat weighs 46,328 tons (42028054.6 kilograms).

    Kinetic energy is 1/2 * Mass * Velocity^2...

So the Titanic had 2.31 × 10^9 joules of kinetic energy when it struct the iceburg. Thats the same energy as a 1000 pounds of TNT!

I don't think there would have been much of any boat left if it struct the iceburg head-on.

  12. but the radiated power varies like the frequency squared

and will be very small at low frequencies. Antenna efficiency also varies like frequency squared' date=' so the observation of radiation goes like f^4.[/quote']

Assuming your using the same antenna to pick up multiple frequencies. Frequencies lower or higher than the designed operating frequency will vary as you describe.

  13. I think the limiting factor for low frequencies transmisions is usually the antenna. Although your driving your speaker coil at a very low frequencies, very few, if any photons are created because it's a very poor antenna.

So why not make a better antenna? Because the antenna would be fricken huge. At 1 Hz a quarter wave dipole antenna would be 75,000 kilometers long or about twice the circumferance of the Earth.

if there isn`t a transition, what happens when we get down to a 1Hz electrical pulse in our coil?

If you're using a 1 Hz sinewave, then only photons of that fundemental frequency will be created.

Now if your pulsing the coil at 1 Hz (sending a square wave through our coil) photons will be emited across the entire spectrum with smaller power levels appearing at higher frequencies. This has to do with the fact that a perfect square wave is composed of a infinite combination sinewaves, not that it's a 1 Hz pulse.

Now the coil itself will have a natural resonating frequency and this should also be evident if you look at the output power. It'll act as a better antenna around that frequency and so more of the photons will be emitted from the antenna at that frequency.

  14. Thank 'ye Swansont.

then how do you explain virtual particles? how can they do what they do?

You're speaking of blackhole evaporation correct? Don't you mean virtual particle pairs then?

As I understand it, if you have a positive virtual photon, a corresponding negative virtual photon must also exist. This results in a net energy of zero. Even if one of these photons falls into the blackhole, while the other escapes, the net energy of the system remains zero. The photon that escapes takes with it the amount of energy equal to the mass lost by the blackhole. No energy is created nor destoryed and so conservation of energy is upheld.

  15. Conservation of energy is a very well tested and excepted theory.

In a nutshell it states that energy can neither be created nor destoryed. It must come from some source or another, but simply can't *poof* into being.

Another as well excepted and tested theory is that no system is 100% efficent and that through every transformation of energy, some usuable energy is lost. There will always be some loss of energy due to friction and/or heat.

Taking these two theories into account, you can see that the idea of a perpetual motion machine is ludicris. It must get energy from somewhere and will be less than 100% efficent.

  16. Lets not forget that if you a guy, your testies like to be kept a few degrees cooler than regular body temperature. Sitting in a hot tub too long or wearing really constricting underwear will make your sperm-count drop.

I wonder if there any other side-effects. A drop in testosterone levels maybe?

  17. I think it's the deceptivly slow sinking of the titanic that made the disaster far worse.

If appearently major damage occured, I believe more of the lifeboats would have been filled to a greater capacity.

  18. How can consciousness be physically defined in flesh and bone, but yet not be something physical? Is the blueprint that represents a structure any less physical than the structure itself?

I'll agree with you in that I believe that consciousness is bound by the flesh and bone of the body. All that is consciousness can be found in the forms of neural paths and chemical interactions in the brain, but where we disagree deals with your view of free will. I beileve that free will can still exist if you consider that the consciousness and the underlying physical structures operate through that of a feedback system; The consciousness of an individual can extert a force over the neural network of the brain, just as this neural network can influence the consciousness. The system is imperfect do to the quantum nature of the universe we live in, nothing is perfectly deterministic. I realize this is violating two of your premises, but how would account for my following two examples in your terms?

Take meditation into consideration. Through focused concentration, the very pattern of the electrical signals through the brain can be influneced and controlled. Here I would say that the conscious mind is exerting control over the physical structure of the brain. Can you account for this in any other manner?

Now consider dreams. Here we have loosely regulated firing of neurons within the brain that inturn trigger images and often farcial stories to appear. Here the neural fabric that composes the conscious mind is directly interacting and exerting some form of control over the conscious. Again, how do you account for this?

  19. I agree that the term conscious is too poorly defined.

I'm gonna see if I can poke some holes in your argument with a few questions.

Is a new born baby conscious?

    What about the metally impared?

    How about labotomized individuals?

How about animals that demonstrate some forms of consciouness like such as Koko the gorilla?

I would say the newborn baby is not yet conscious, but has the ability to become so.

The mentally disabled person has some limited form of consciousness, but will not operate on the same level as others.

The labotomized individual lost the ability to be conscious in many respects.

You could say that everything the gorillia does is learned, but couldn't you also argue that all consciousness has to be learned?

It all depends on what an individual has the ability to learn and what the individual does learn. Learned behavor is not evolutionary, but the ability to learn a behavor is.

In this same sence I could argue that any abstract concept could not arise from evoltion, just as you have. Abstract concepts are learned into existance, not evolved.

  20. So the question is.... If I were going to melt people down for their base elements, which element would make me the most money per person?

Hmm, i could see a work of art coming from this list.... Take the proper amounts of each element, lump them together, and call it a person. It would be a pretty neat visual.
