  1. Hi again.

I thought I had it figured out but I am confused again :)

When I multiply it by y^2 I get

    [math]

    6y+8=-y^2

    [/math]

then i set the right hand side to 0 to get

    [math]

    y^2+6y+8=0

    [/math]

this is general quadratic form isn't it?

So I plug the coefficients into the quadratic formula and get

    -2, -4

    What are these numbers?

If I put them into the original quadratic form i get

    -7,-3.5

    I don't get it :)

    Thanks again

  2. Hi,

I have never really been a math type of person and am taking a intro to math course at uni.

I am asked to solve an equation in the same format as the one below and indicate clearly the method used.

The trouble is I have no idea how to do it :)

    [math]

    {6}/{y} + {8}/{y^2} = -1

    [/math]

I would really appreciated any help.

    Thanks :)

edit: I don't know how to make fractions with latex :)

  3. Hi,

I a have used just about every Java IDE there is.

I suppose it is totally a personal choice on what you like.

    My favourite is IntelliJ.

Its small, fast, doesn't intrude on your code or modify anything with its designer.

  4. Hi, I am new to everything medicine and was hoping someone could tell me the field in which scientists actively research causes and cures of diseases ect

Do you have to go to med school or do you study medical science at uni if you were interested in being a researcher?

Where does the money go to when raised in say a fight cancer charity?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks :)

  5. Ok, I'll have one more crack at it before i sleep :)

    One of the definitions was

"Is the material substance of the universe that has mass, occupies space, and is convertible to energy. "

If someone could give me an example of matter turning into energy that could explain energy to me.

But i will take a guess.

A lump of wood is matter, you set it on fire. The fire turns the wood into heat and heat is a form of energy.

    Is that right?

If so, can you turn heat back into some kind of matter is is it doomed to stay energy forever?

  6. Hi again,

I've been doing a bit of googling and think i am getting closer to understanding.

I search for define: matter and the first definition was

substance: that which has mass and occupies space; "an atom is the smallest indivisible unit of matter"

This is what confuses me. It says an atom is the smallest unit of matter but on other sites it says electron, protons and neutrons are clasified as matter and they are smaller than atoms. Also, when you go smaller and get to quarks and neutrinos ect they are matter. And if you kept going and say for arguments sake strings were the smallest things, 1 string would be matter right?

So is a string made of energy or is energy just a label for force?

Sorry, i'm confusing myself even more :)

  7. Hi, I made a post in a couple of buddhist forums and had some quite interesting answers. I would like to hear if scientists can explain it, or if it is even an issue in neuroscience.

    This was the post:

Hi, I have I question that I have been thinking about for years. You know when you are in bed and just about to go to sleep and everything is quiet, you can hear this faint high frequncy buzzing sound that is always there. It seems to be louder when you have been listening to loud music or had a few beers or if you've been doing some heavy thinking.

Also, when you settle down to breath meditation in a completely silent room, when you attain complete stillness it is that sound that exists and nothing else.

My question is, is this sound part of the human brain, i mean, is it the sound of a physical process like nuerons in the brain or something. And if so, is it possible to attain a state beyond it and have complete silence. Or, is it beyond the physical and the very sound of the energy that life itsef is.

I know this question can probably be only answered by accomplished meditators but I would appreciate any opinions.

I found a website that mentions it but it is a science site and i dont think they really answer it well.

    Here is the link

They put it down to tinitus which is a condition of the inner ear but supposedly only 1 in 5 people have it. But I have asked all my family and friends if they can hear it and they say they can. Hopefuly they dont all have tinitus

Here is a link to the post in a buddhist forum to see some buddhist answers

Is this sound known in nueroscience?

    Thanks for any info
