bacterial counting method?

Hey, So i'm learning about bacterial cultures and performing counting procedures. I'm confused as to when you centrifuge you bacterial culture that is inoculated in broth, do you get the bacterial count from the supernatant if plated or do you have to re-suspend the pellet in medium and then plate it? Would love some ideas from you guys :)
