Why do clouds look the way they do ?

 

I mean, even Wordsworth said, and i quote : "I wondered lonely as a cloud..." and the imagery is very vivid and striking.

 

Why do they resemble cotton wool clumps of more or less predictable size ?

 

How does fluid mechanics play a role in all of this ?

 

Please advise.
