Chemical bonding homework help

Featured Replies

Hi, I need help with my chemistry homework. This has to do with chemical bonding. These are only some of the questions the teacher gave me.

Describe:

The force that bonds two hydrogen atoms in a hydrogen molecule, H2

The relationship between the bond energy of a molecule and its bond strength

Which is more stable, compounds with high bond energies or low bond energies

Given the following bond length:

Molecule

1. F2

2. Cl2

3. Br2

4. I2

Bond Length

1. 141 pm

2. 199 pm

3. 228 pm

4. 267 pm

Bond Energy

1. 156 KJ/mole

2. 243 KJ/mole

3. 193 KJ/mole

4. 151 KJ/mole

Explain the general trend that a bond length increases the bond energy decreases going from F2 to I2

Chorline has a longer bond length than fluorine yet it has a higher bond energy, why?

Given the following,

Molecule

1. H-F

2. H-Cl

3. H-Br

4. H-I

Bond Length

1. 92 pm

2. 127 pm

3. 141 pm

4. 161 pm

Bond Energy

1. 569 KJ/Mole

2. 432 KJ/Mole

3. 366 KJ/Mole

4. 299 KJ/Mole

The N-N and O-O single covalent bonds aremuch weaker than the C-C single covalent bond. Explain.

Which are more stable, compound with high bond energies or compounds with low bond energies?

I'll show the rest later.

we're not here to do your homework for you. contrary to popular belief we do have things to do in our lives.

i'd be happy to help you if you had specific questions pertaining to your questions or if you would at least show an attempt to do this yourself

It's all very simple. I also agree with budullewraagh, if you had a specific question it'd be easier for someone to help you. I'm sure that if you read the chapter in your chemistry book that pertains to the homework you'd get it.

Yeah, I just found out in the rules that no one's here to help out with homework. I would, however, like small, but helpful tips to help me, if you don't mind.

surely you were taught how to do these in schools?

if there's one type of question you cannot do then ask... dont copy out your whole HW sheet!

The help we offer in the homework forum is of the type "tell us why you don't get it, and we'll explain the bit that is giving you a problem", not the "let us do it for you" variety.
