why direction of rotating emf and direction of rotation of field(with the help of a motor) is to be maintained same while conducting slip test on a synchronous machine?

The reason we rotate the field with the help of a motor is to maintain some relative speed between rotating flux and field winding.If we rotate in opposite direction then also we can have relative speed(and may get fluctuations in voltmeter and ammeter). But we rotate the field in the direction of rotation of flux only.WHY?
