Is there a difference? microcontroller vs microcomputer?

Featured Replies

microcontroller: a single-chip microcomputer with on-board program ROM and I/O that can be programmed for various control functions

microcomputer: a computer that uses a microprocessor and its own memory/storage space to perform applications. also called a personal computer because it usually doesnt have the power to operate other computers. a desktop personal computer that serves a single user

basically a 'normal' computer that is not a dumb terminal* and not a server

*dumb termianl: a computer terminal with no processing or programming capabilities, generally used for simple data entry or retrieval tasks (all data comes from a host, normally a server) e.g. a large business or school network has a host/server computer. all the other computers around the school have no processing/programming/storage capabilities, all info retrieved from main host/server.
