virus in e-mail

i came to extend my last answer and couldnt really think of anything more to say other than they spread as attachments in emails. i.e. someone sends you a virus in which they have attached a document, and that doc just happens to be a virus.

Virtually all viruses and many worms cannot spread unless you open or run an infected program.

Many of the most dangerous viruses were primarily spread through e-mail attachments—the files that are sent along with an e-mail message. You can usually tell if your e-mail includes an attachment because you'll see a paperclip icon that represents the attachment and includes its name. Photos' date=' letters written in Microsoft Word, and even Excel spreadsheets are just some of the file types you might receive through e-mail each day. The virus is launched when you open the file attachment (usually by double-clicking the attachment icon).

Tip: Never open anything that is attached to an e-mail unless you were expecting the attachment and you know the exact contents of that file.

If you receive an e-mail with an attachment from someone you don't know you should delete it immediately. Unfortunately, you're no longer safe opening attachments from people you do know. Viruses and worms have the ability to steal the information out of e-mail programs and send themselves to everyone listed in your address book. So, if you get an e-mail from someone with a message you don't understand or a file you weren't expecting, always contact the person and confirm the contents of the attachment before you open it.

Other viruses can spread through programs you download from the Internet or from virus-ridden computer disks that you borrow from friends or even buy in a store. These are less common ways to contract a virus. Most people get viruses from opening and running unknown e-mail attachments.[/quote']

YOU GET A VIRUS SCANNER AND A FIREWALL.

your computer will be running slower, check your process and go to:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/

to see if they are safe or not (viruses which are running should appear in the proces list)

i find that:

http://www.teamcti.com/pview/

is a very good process viewer as it allows the process to be instantly terminated (download the program, select the process and click kill [red X] and it will instantly terminate the process)

full path shows you where the program is, just go there and delete it straight from the source!

also you can double click on process allowing for more info, generally a virus will not have info (although a few rare innocent programs dont have info either)

also go to (if you winXP)

start > run > msconfig > start up > this shows process which start up with windows, normally viruses start and will be in that group somewhere so check you know what they all are.

needless to say stop a essential program from running at start-up and you may have problems as may you have probs if you terminate a critical system.

when you do click 'kill' in process viewer, ignore the warning, you always get it!

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU HAVE A ANTI-VIRUS (AV) AND A FIREWALL. even if you have a dial-up modem, even if you go for free ones they are essential... you must have one, even if you are behind a router, that is not enough, infact router firewalls are only for basic basic hackers and still allow advance hackers in.
