johndoe64 Posted September 1, 2011 Share Posted September 1, 2011 I need help figuring out how to safely handle a bottle of nitric acid that has white crystals on the cap. I know that it is Ammonium Nitrate, which is explosive. How concerned should I be with this? I was told that a single spark could set it off. I am afraid to open the cabinet that it is in or to pick up the bottle. I want to dispose of this but am not sure how to handle it to do so. insane_alien Posted September 1, 2011 Share Posted September 1, 2011 (edited) ammonium nitrate is water soluble. just wash it off with plain old water. there is little risk of detonating it, you need to put a bit of directed effort in to do that.
