simple equation help?

Featured Replies

Hello! Im new here so and in a hurry :P so I don't know if I'm posting at the right place but anyway here's my pickle!

I'm trying to isolate y in this equation:

(y^2) - 4y +10 = P

anyone care to hint me ? I tried decomposition but it was in vain heheheeeeeeeee

THanks!

EDIT: Sorry; I mis-read your equation. I am not completely sure that you want to isolate y, so I'll give you two options of what can be a sensible thing to do.

1) Solve for y -> quadratic formula.

2) Rearrange (y-something)^2 = something else. -> completing the square.

Hmm Im not sure I understand option 2 but solving y with the quad formula should work. I would have to treat (10-P) as my constant C and solve for y! That should do the trick!?

^^ my original reply was crap since I mis-read your equation (didn't see that 4y has a "y" in it...). Sorry about that. See the now-modified post.
