how does sugar/glycerol inhibit crystallization of soap ?

sugar n glycerol are used in making soaps transparent apparently by preventing crystallization of soap. I want an explanation of this property with more simple examples n reference to article( if possible)

 

what else can they be substituted by to make a transparent soap.
