what is the basic use of the transformer in a rectifier? please explain

yeah sure actually as far my knowledge goes transformer is used for stepping down the voltage so that the diode doesnt breaks means the minimum voltage is 6v which can go through it. suppose we connect it to mains then the potential is very high like 220v so by the help of the transformer we can step down it...........so is this is the only use?

No it is not the only use. Let's say the rectifier is used simply to convert from AC to DC but maintain the same voltage. Do you suppose the transformer would still be included? If so, try to figure out why it might still be required.
