micro organisms - sand- water filtration

i am not on the computer much and i know science like i know chinese(which i currently do not) that said, ... there are micro organisms that you "grow" and maintain in sand, that, combined with other filters like charcoal,etc. filters water to drinkability...? do i need specific type of sand...better question could anyone suggest some super good somewhat easy to understand reading materials?
