microstate tables for p1d1 config

Featured Replies

For p1d1:

p -> m(l)=-1,0,1 and m(s)=+1/2,-1/2

d-> m(l)=-2,-1,0,1,2 and m(s)=+1/2,-1/2

When I did the table, I got 60 microstates. I was wondering if it was correct because I don't know how to enter it in the n(microstate) equation. I don't know if i=8 and j=2 or i=5 and j=2 and neither of them give me 60 anyway. Could you please explain what I'm doing wrong there?

n=1:

l=0(s subshell)

m=0.(1 orbital)

n=2:

l=0:

m=0

l=1:(p subshell)

m=1,0,-1(3 orbital)

n=3

l=0

m=0

l=1:

m=1,0,-1(3 orbital)

l=2:(d subshell)

m=2,1,0,-1,-2(5 orbitals)

Yeah thanks but that didnt really help, you just told something I knew already. I worked it out anyway. 60 was the correct number. Thanks anyway

You better check in Advanced Inorganic Chemistry by Cotton and Wilkinson to find a better answer for it.....
