Hi,

 

Was wondering if the open (and closed) strings are associated with force carriers at all and if so how.

You find states that correspond to gauge bosons in the spectrum of the quantum open string. So in a low energy limit this can reproduce (a supersymmetric version of) the standard model.

 

A state corresponding to the gravition is found in the spectrum of a closed string.
