What kind of research has been done on the spinal cord within the neck.

More specifically the research regarding nerve impulses and mapping of nerve bundles to appropriate limbs?

here is a cross section of the spinal cord. it's roughly divided between left and right and sub-divided between motor and sensory, within each half.

I believe this map also correlates to the map of the Medulla at the base of the brain/top of the spinal chord
