Genetic testing identifies the unique genetic profile of an individual, the genetic profile inherited partly from the father and partly from the mother. By comparing the child’s genetic profile with that of the alleged father, a DNA paternity test determines whether the person is the real biological father.

There are several 'markers' which the father and child must share in order to show that he really is the father of the child.

If two or more markers do not match i.e are in different places on the graph, then that excludes the possibility that they are the father.

If all markers match, that doesn't necessarily mean that he is the father, as some people may share similar genetic information with people who are not related to them, but it is unlikely.
