Is black river sand iron ore ? can i use black sand for a primitive smelt.

well, we'd need more information to tell you what 'black river sand' was. a sample prefferably.

 

but i doubt it is iron ore as it typically turns orange/red in a river.

If the grains are attracted to a magnet, they probably do have an iron oxide.
