situation: one is conducting an experiment to deduce the reactivity series of metals based on their reactions with oxygen

to supply the oxygen, KMnO4 is heated

however, it is heated only AFTER heating the metal which is going to be tested

why is the metal heated strongly first before heating potassium permanganate?
