acid is used as a catalyst for the reaction between propanone and iodine. what is the purpose of adding sodium hydrogencarbonate too in the reaction?

i dont think this is an order of reaction question. I suspect your answer lies in thinking about what the products of the reaction are and what will happen to them when they encounter sodium hydrogencarbonate
