Is Chernobyl safe?

Featured Replies

i have seen advertised tours to chernobyl recently. Can anyone advise me as to whether the levels of radiation there now are safe for humans?

I should imagine there would be laws to protect you from such harm and that you wouldn`t be allowed anywhere near dangerous materials :)

Putting the law in place doesn't necessarily actually change the level of radiation though, that's the problem.

I remember talking to a post-grad while I was at university. This guy had been doing research into mutations in annelids etc in the areas surrounding Chernobyl, and had to constantly hide his movements from the authorities. This suggests it might not be easy to get good information on the radiation levels in the immediate area.
