Homosexual Roller Coaster

Featured Replies

I was wondering if the percentage of people that are homosexual rises and falls in a regular way; or at least used to.

My reasoning for this is that during a period when homosexuality is considered bad, then it is likely that homosexuals will attempt to live heterosexual lives; they may marry and have children. This would mean that if there's any genetic element to a persons homosexuality it may be passed on the children.

As the population secretly increases the attitude of society begins to change and homosexuality is no longer frowned upon. This means that the need to hide disappears and so the passing on of any responsible gene is reduced.

The homosexual population then starts to decline again until the number reaches a level where society again begins to turn against it.

From this you would get a roller coaster effect in the numbers of homosexual people over a large enough time period.

With the advent of in-vitro fertilisation though, it is now possible for the homosexual population to maintain their numbers without having to resort to hiding in marriages/relationships because of the attitude of the society in which they live.

Looking back in history there seems to be times when homosexuality was oppressed and times when it was accepted, if not even celebrated.
