NSX If I got your words right, then the episode you're talking about was about SPLITTING the "rikers".

 

They found a wreck place and when riker was about to lead the away team they found out that "another" riker is already down there...

 

what happened in that epi is that they both got beamed down a few years before (on other sort of mission at the same place) - and when they were beamed up, somerthing happened (explosion) --- the transporter already took a reading of riker's body to "beam" up -- so it created him on the ship, while the explosion actually kept the "down the planet" riker still alive...

 

good epi. It was more the point of transporters disessembling / reassembling the body,,

I think some sort of material that that they had to beam through reflected part of the transporter back to the planet. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure. :D
