How does long acting insulin work?

Okay, in case u guys don't know about it, there are 2 types of insulin. One is short acting which takes effect after 20 minutes after injection. The other is long acting with takes effect after 2 HOURS. How does it work? What do they do to it to make it start working after 2 hours?
