The melting point obtained by students is usually lower than the literature value. What are the reasons for this? What improvement can be made?

more than likely Inaccurate measuring equipment (they only have a certain tolerance) and Contamination of the reagents used (these also have a limited tolerance depending on the Grade).

melting point of what exactly? if it is organic solids then contamination is the cause.
